OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Meets Senior Samsung Group Executives in South Korea on Saturday to Discuss Memory Chips and AI Infrastructure Cooperation

According to a Bloomberg report on October 31, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met senior Samsung Group executives in South Korea on Saturday to discuss deepening cooperation on memory chips and AI infrastructure. Global related supply shortages are intensifying.

Samsung said in a statement that the company held the meeting in Yongin, south of Seoul, and about 50 executives from electronics, finance, and biotechnology-related companies attended. The discussions focused on how artificial intelligence could reshape industries, corporate decision-making, and business opportunities over the next decade.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of tight supply of memory products and rising chip prices. Data center operators' demand is intensifying competition for supply. The report noted that the meeting built on previous cooperation: Samsung Electronics and OpenAI signed a letter of intent in October 2025 to cooperate on global AI infrastructure, including supplying memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate project and jointly building data centers, including floating offshore facilities. No new supply agreement has been announced yet.

This meeting was Altman's return visit to South Korea after his October 2025 trip, extending the existing framework between the two sides on the Stargate project. At that time, Samsung and SK hynix planned to expand advanced memory chip production capacity, aiming to accelerate DRAM wafer monthly capacity expansion. Saturday's discussion focused more on corporate AI transformation and long-term strategy, rather than announcing specific new supply volumes or price agreements on the spot.

Against the backdrop of memory shortages, memory accounts for about one-third of data center spending, and major participants in AI infrastructure plan to invest more than $3 trillion over the next few years. As a leader in advanced memory, Samsung's high-level engagement may help OpenAI secure priority in production capacity expansion timing and allocation, while also serving Samsung's own need to accelerate internal AI transformation.

Further attention should be paid to whether additional supply agreements or capacity adjustments are disclosed, as well as related interactions with SK Group (there were reports of contact on the same day). Public information is currently limited to the meeting and discussion direction, and no new binding transaction has been confirmed.
