Amazon Closes AGI Lab and Restructures Focus on Nova Model

Amazon is revamping its self-developed AI, having laid off employees from the AGI team and closed the AGI Lab established in 2024 last week.

Most flagship Nova models will stop major upgrades, retaining only existing customer support, while manpower and computing power will be concentrated on a new flagship foundational model led by Pieter Abbeel, expected to debut at AWS re:Invent.

This shift indicates a transition for the tech giant from multiple parallel AI initiatives to a single cutting-edge model, with funding and talent directed towards teams focused on reinforcement learning and robotics, benefiting from a competitive focus while the previously diversified multimodal upgrade paths face pressure.

Amazon previously established the AGI Lab through the acquisition of the Adept team and launched the Nova multimodal family, but is now closing the lab due to internal restructuring and placing Premier, Omni, Reel, Canvas, and others in maintenance mode, shifting its bets to cutting-edge model research led by Pieter Abbeel.

In terms of capital strategy, the company is reallocating resources from a broad model matrix to a single flagship, motivated by the desire to enhance competitiveness against OpenAI and Anthropic, while leveraging technology and talent acquired from Covariant, with funding concentrated on foundational models to be released at re:Invent.

This mirrors the path of other cloud vendors transitioning from early multi-model experimentation to focusing on cutting-edge developments, currently positioning Amazon AI at a stage of shifting from product coverage to technological breakthroughs.

Essentially, this represents a technological substitution: a single cutting-edge model replacing a multi-track parallel strategy, as focusing under limited computing power and talent is more likely to yield breakthroughs, thereby restructuring the organization and priorities of the company's self-developed AI.
