BAYC NFT Project Launches Solana-Based Physical and Digital Trading Card Mudwater

Bored Ape Yacht Club has launched the Mudwater collection project of physical and digital trading cards based on the Solana blockchain, airdropping 6,551 Totems to all BAYC and MAYC holders for card pack redemption.

Each BAYC holder can claim 10 packs, while each MAYC holder can claim 2 packs, with each pack containing 10 cards. A total of 10,000 boxes are available, with holders able to redeem through the official page until January 19, 2027.

The series includes 120 art pieces, featuring foil cards, numbered cards, and rare "ice shard" textured collectibles, with 8 being unique 1/1 ice shard cards. The physical cards are printed by Orange Cap Games using Orange Core paper, and digital cards can be converted to physical cards and vice versa.

Each transaction includes a 2.5% reward mechanism, with funds used to purchase APE tokens and distributed to collectors based on their Mudwater asset holdings. Totems, card packs, and individual cards are currently available for trading on OpenSea, with future support for upgrading packs to boxes and cases.

The official description of Mudwater is an ancient game originating from swamp areas, now presented in both digital and physical forms, with plans to support combat gameplay in the Otherside metaverse. Currently, pack openings support on-chain operations, with box and case combination features to be opened later.

Funds generated from transactions flow directly from buyers and sellers to APE buybacks and are distributed to cardholders, linking secondary market activity with APE demand. Users holding BAYC and MAYC receive free card packs as initial distribution, while non-holders must purchase through the secondary market, with the project retaining some commercial distribution inventory.

Yuga Labs previously expanded the BAYC ecosystem through Otherside land sales and APE token issuance, facing a general decline in the NFT market and slowed metaverse development after 2022. The team had moved some activities to its own ApeChain, and this time chose Solana as the card base layer, continuing its cross-chain attempts while introducing physical cards into the collectibles line.

The project airdrops Totems to existing BAYC and MAYC holders to allocate most card packs, converting existing NFT holders into the initial circulation source for the new series. The 2.5% transaction reward is used for ongoing APE buybacks and distributed according to holding ratios, creating a direct link between card trading volume and APE demand, with resources flowing from secondary market trades to token holders.

Similar paths can be seen in other blue-chip NFT projects attempting to expand into physical goods or trading cards, such as some projects launching physical merchandise or limited prints. Currently, BAYC is transitioning from purely digital PFPs to multi-form collectibles and gamified assets, with the card series serving as divisible, upgradeable, and physically deliverable assets, differing from the early indivisible NFT avatar structure.

This represents a restructuring of the industry chain: expanding a single on-chain PFP into dual-track physical and digital assets, while transforming trading friction into a token buyback mechanism. Choosing Solana reduces transaction and minting costs, facilitating pack openings and combinations, while the reward mechanism reconnects secondary market activity to the APE ecosystem, changing the funding cycle that relied solely on new minting or land sales.
