HubSpot Announces Layoffs of Nearly 660 Employees

HubSpot announced it will lay off nearly 660 employees, accounting for about 7% of its total workforce. The company's board approved the restructuring plan on October 1.

CEO Yamini Rangan sent a memo to employees on October 6 announcing the decision. The company stated that its strategy has shifted from providing software to delivering customer outcomes through artificial intelligence, necessitating an adjustment in organizational structure.

The company plans to build a flatter organization, reduce management layers, and reorganize product teams around customer outcomes rather than traditional product lines. Rangan clarified that the layoffs are not directly driven by increased efficiency from artificial intelligence.

The expected restructuring costs are between $65 million and $75 million, primarily for severance pay, most of which will be accounted for in the fourth quarter of 2026. The layoffs are expected to be largely completed by the first quarter of 2027, subject to local legal processes.

Affected employees generally receive 20 weeks of base salary, plus an additional week for each year of service, up to a maximum of 30 weeks. Health benefits and six months of career transition support will also be provided. The company reaffirmed its revenue guidance at the same time.

In terms of market mechanisms, the organizational adjustments serve the shift in product and pricing strategy. Beneficiaries are the product directions focused on artificial intelligence outcomes, while the pressured roles are the streamlined management and execution positions.

HubSpot CEO Yamini Rangan linked the layoffs to the strategy shift from software sales to AI-driven customer outcome delivery. The company also emphasized that this is not merely an efficiency-driven layoff.

On the capital front, the company has set aside $65 million to $75 million for restructuring costs and is providing longer severance compensation. The stock has significantly declined this year, but the company maintains its revenue guidance.

This is similar to cases where software companies restructure teams during changes in product form. The company is currently in a phase of transitioning from functional sales to outcome delivery.

Essentially, this is a form of technological substitution. Organizational levels and team structures are being adjusted to match the changes in products and customer interactions driven by artificial intelligence.
