OpenAI Releases GPT Transcribe and Live Transcribe Models

OpenAI has released two speech-to-text models: GPT Transcribe and GPT Live Transcribe.

The former handles recorded files and batch tasks, while the latter is used for live subtitles and real-time scenarios like phone calls, enhancing recognition of short phrases, numbers, terminology, multiple accents, and noisy environments.

Event-driven speech AI improves accuracy and cost optimization, with funding directed towards OpenAI API calls, putting pressure on traditional transcription services while benefiting real-time applications.

OpenAI previously established a foundation for speech transcription with the open-source Whisper model, followed by the launch of the GPT-4o series for transcription, continuously iterating on contextual prompting capabilities. This separation of batch and real-time paths is aimed at matching different latency requirements.

Capital pathways indicate that the company is investing training resources into domain adaptation and noise robustness, motivated by capturing market share in enterprise-level and real-time scenarios through lower error rates and price reductions, specifically enhancing support for themes, keywords, and language prompts.

Similar to the accuracy competition paths of Google and Deepgram in the STT field, the current speech recognition industry is in an upgrade phase from general models to context-aware specialized models.

This is essentially a technological replacement, with the mechanism being that large models combined with prompt engineering significantly reduce errors in specific scenarios, making voice interfaces more reliable and accelerating the implementation of multimodal applications.
