Anthropic’s first growth employee, Austin Lau, announces he has joined OpenAI

Austin Lau posted on X on November 5, 2026, that he has recently joined OpenAI.

He said in the post that his time at Anthropic was a dream in the best sense of the word, that he helped build the growth function, worked with many talented people, and handled some of the most challenging problems of his career.

Lau was previously Anthropic’s first growth marketing employee. According to a July 2024 interview with Passionfroot, he was responsible for driving more people to use Claude, and before joining he had worked in growth marketing at companies including Dropbox and Notion.

An official Anthropic article published on January 26, 2026 introduced that Lau had never written code before, and used Claude Code to build two tools on his own: one was a Figma plugin that could batch-generate multiple versions of ad creative with one click; the other was used to generate Google search ad copy and export files that could be uploaded. The article said that it originally took about 30 minutes to make one ad, but that was reduced to about 30 seconds.

Lau also mentioned in this post that Anthropic’s coffee and drinks were better, while OpenAI’s snacks were better. He did not disclose his specific role at OpenAI.

The work of a growth team is to expand acquisition and retention through ads, SEO, signup-flow optimization, user onboarding, and other methods after the product becomes available. When Lau took on this function from scratch at Anthropic, the company did not yet have a mature growth system. He handled it alone for nearly ten months, covering channels such as paid search, social ads, app store optimization, email, and SEO, a period that overlapped with Anthropic’s transition from a research lab to a scaled product company.

His public working style was to use Claude Code to turn repetitive tasks that would normally rely on engineering support into self-built tools. The Figma plugin and ad-copy workflow directly addressed the most frequent bottlenecks in growth-role asset production, bringing the volume of single-person testing and iteration close to that of a traditional full marketing team. This path of a nontechnical person using the company’s own model to build growth infrastructure was clearly presented in Anthropic’s official case study and has also become part of his personal brand.

During the same period, Claude Code product lead Cat Wu also announced that she would join OpenAI. The two companies are in fierce competition in model capability, coding agents, and enterprise productization, and the movement of growth and productization talent reflects that both sides are filling the execution layer that turns model capabilities into user acquisition at scale. Lau did not specify his new role, but based on his background, it is more likely to still be in growth systems rather than a pure research role.

For Anthropic, the departure of its first growth employee came during a window of rapid revenue expansion and preparation for larger-scale financing or an IPO. The early growth function was carried by a single person; later it needs to become systematized and team-based. Having a core executor poached by a competitor amplifies the talent gap in organizational expansion. For OpenAI, bringing in someone who has already proven able to rebuild growth processes with AI tools may accelerate iteration in acquisition efficiency. Neither side has issued an official comment on this move so far.

  1. The departure of the first employee in a role often occurs at the point when that function is shifting from “individual heroics” to “systematic teams.”

  2. Cases of using one’s own product to solve bottlenecks in one’s job easily become transferable proof of capability when talent moves.

  3. The continuous movement of both product and growth talent to the same competitor is more indicative of tight execution-side supply and demand than a single case.
