ByteDance’s Jimeng launches a short drama studio
ByteDance’s Jimeng AI (called Dreamina in overseas markets) officially launched its “short drama studio” on October 26, 2026, bringing script organization, character and scene management, storyboard generation, video production, and post-production adjustments onto a single platform.
The platform is powered by its in-house script model DreamScript, which supports parsing long-form text of about 100,000 Chinese characters and continuously generating up to 100 episodes of scripts, while also checking for plot conflicts and character settings. The storyboard model DreamShot provides a 3D director’s console that can adjust camera setups and camera movement and preview the results. Characters, clothing, scenes, and other elements in the scripts are automatically organized into an asset library for later shot reuse; after generation, if a single shot is unsatisfactory, it can be reshot separately. The image model Anycook is responsible for differentiated character settings and multi-style scene creation.
The platform also offers a “remake and redraw” function: after uploading a finished short drama, AI will break down the characters, scenes, props, and shot structure, then regenerate the visuals according to the selected target region, visual style, and aspect ratio, while trying to preserve the original piece’s plot rhythm and visual language. This function partially integrates capabilities that Xiaoyunque previously had. On October 24, 36Kr reported that Xiaoyunque had been merged into Jimeng, with the product still retaining an independent entry point, and operations handled by Chen Xinran, Jimeng’s operations and marketing head.

At the beginning of 2024, Zhang Nan stepped down as CEO of Douyin Group and instead took charge of the Jianying and CapCut businesses; in May of that year, the Jianying team launched Jimeng. In March 2026, Xiaoyunque, also under the Jianying system, launched a short drama agent based on Seedance 2.0, supporting uploads of scripts of up to 100,000 Chinese characters and one-click generation of finished videos, with a complete workflow from script parsing to storyboarding. This short drama studio further integrates Xiaoyunque’s proven long-text parsing and asset-binding capabilities into Jimeng, while adding a 3D director’s console and single-shot reshoots.
In terms of business path, Jimeng and Xiaoyunque previously had overlapping functions, both able to complete the process from generation to finished video. 36Kr reported that this integration was mainly driven by resource concentration: after model capabilities improved, revenue from Seedance calls on Volcano Engine’s MaaS side had already exceeded that of the company’s own application layer, so the company reduced application-side investment, focused on professional creator tools, and increased investment in the overseas version of Dreamina. The short drama studio directly serves the content supply needs of domestic Hongguo and overseas PineDrama (operated by the TikTok team, with cumulative downloads exceeding 100 million and daily active users of about 7 million as of mid-October).
Similar to the early CapCut path of integrating multiple editing and template tools into a single editor, Jimeng this time is also consolidating scattered generation and post-production capabilities into one workflow. The difference is that CapCut at the time mainly solved finished-video editing efficiency, while the short drama studio also adds “remake and redraw” — adapting existing finished videos to new market styles and aspect ratios at low cost, rather than reshooting from scratch. Compared with vendors that only provide model APIs, Jimeng is also connected to the distribution entry points of Douyin, TikTok, Hongguo, and PineDrama.
For professional studios and institutional teams, shared asset libraries and single-shot reshoots reduce the cost of maintaining consistency in characters, clothing, and scenes across multiple episodes; remake and redraw compresses the marginal cost of turning existing domestic short dramas into versions that can be deployed overseas to near the cost of generation. Combined with PineDrama’s free-plus-advertising model similar to Hongguo’s, content supply speed and localization adaptability become controllable variables on the platform side. The observation metric is whether, after the launch of Jimeng’s short drama studio, the frequency of new drama launches on overseas platforms such as PineDrama and the share of non-Chinese visual styles show observable increases.

Tool integration brings multi-episode consistency maintenance from dispersed operations into a single asset library.
Remake and redraw allows existing finished videos to be regenerated according to a new market’s style and aspect ratio rather than being reshot from scratch.
After revenue from model calls exceeds the application layer, in-house tools begin to shift toward professional creators and distribution entry points.
