Vitalik: Ethereum's Scaling Goal Merges UTXO and Dynamic State

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik has published an article explaining the core objectives of the current scaling strategy, first acknowledging the Bitcoin community's pioneering contributions in related technologies, and clarifying that Ethereum's scaling strategy is progressing in this direction.

He emphasized the desire for Ethereum to simultaneously possess UTXO-style state, dynamic state, and all the advantages between the two, deeply integrating the efficiency of Bitcoin's UTXO model in state management, light node validation, and scalability with Ethereum's flexible account model, smart contract ecosystem, and dynamic state capabilities.

Vitalik reiterated that the ultimate goal of scaling is to enable the vast majority of activities on Ethereum to achieve massive scalability without sacrificing decentralization, ease of node operation, and censorship resistance—these three core attributes.

The Ethereum roadmap is shifting from a pure pursuit of scalability to a systematic effort to find a better balance between scalability and decentralized resilience.

The new state type design includes key nonces, circular buffers, UTXOs, etc., aimed at significantly lowering fees for most use cases such as ERC20 and NFTs while retaining the existing dynamic state for complex applications.

At the market mechanism level, the scaling plan promotes the flow of funds and development resources toward infrastructure and applications that support mixed state models, with buyers focusing on long-term scalability and node friendliness, event-driven L1 capacity expectations rising, while pure L2 dependency models face pressure, benefiting mixed state-related tools.

Supplementary data shows that related discussions reference Bitcoin's Utreexo and plan for a capacity combination of dynamic state and new scalable state around 2030.

As a core proponent of Ethereum's philosophy, Vitalik has previously proposed state expansion and ZK-related solutions, from early sharding to the current Lean Ethereum and new state types. Historical behavior shows his ongoing search for structural solutions between scalability and decentralization, rather than a single directional breakthrough.

On the capital path, the Ethereum Foundation and research teams are investing resources into state model innovation and proof systems, motivated by the goal of enabling most activities to achieve massive scalability while keeping ordinary nodes operational. Strategically, they aim to consolidate L1's long-term competitiveness by borrowing efficiency from Bitcoin's UTXO while retaining the flexibility of the account model.

Similar cases can be seen in Bitcoin's Utreexo light node solution and Solana's state management attempts in high-throughput chains. The public chain industry is currently transitioning from a single expansion path to a parallel approach of mixed states and proof verification.

Structural judgment belongs to the reconstruction of the industry chain: because traditional fully dynamic states struggle to balance decentralization at extreme scales, the mechanism introduces restrictive but efficient new state types to divert most use cases, forcing the application layer to selectively migrate for cost advantages, shifting pricing power from general states to specialized efficient state designs.
