OpenAI Team Producing Series of Videos to Help Small Business Owners with ChatGPT

OpenAI employee Victor E. Nunez stated that the team is producing a series of videos visiting small business owners to address real bottlenecks using ChatGPT. The official ChatGPT account shared this post. He mentioned that recent demonstrations have mostly focused on itinerary planning and Blender, but this time they are changing the subject.

When asked where the bottlenecks are concentrated, he replied that most involve key tasks that pull owners away from their core business: paperwork, incoming inquiries, taxes, management, social media accounts, and copywriting. The post did not disclose the number of participating businesses, fees, or whether it will become an independent product.

There is existing usage data in the same direction. OpenAI stated in May 2026 that at least 4 million Americans used ChatGPT to plan, start, operate, or expand their businesses from March. Among them, 71% are currently operating, and 29% are in preparation. Professional and agency services account for 22%, while retail and e-commerce account for 21%. The subjects are mostly consulting, online stores, home services, beauty, and restaurants, rather than newly established tech companies.

On September 29, OpenAI wrote that in one week of September, about 4 million employees came from companies with fewer than 500 people, with nearly one-fifth in businesses with fewer than 10 employees. In August, outputs from ChatGPT Work and Codex accounted for two-thirds of small business outputs, up from one-third in April. Financial accounting, supply chain, legal compliance, and marketing account for at least three times the proportion in small business agency interactions compared to large enterprises.

Implementation actions have already been separated. In July, ChatGPT for small business was launched. The Academy Community Trainer Program is preparing to train about 150 small business development center consultants, aiming to reach at least 1,000 small businesses through on-site workshops. Ted and Tami Taylor, operators of three restaurants in New Mexico, used ChatGPT Work to compare competitor menu prices before adjusting their own menus.

This is about content acquisition, not a new funding round. The buyers are small shop owners without dedicated finance, legal, and social media staff, while the sellers are ChatGPT charging based on seats and usage. The beneficiaries are OpenAI, which turns consultant and restaurant case studies into shareable videos, and shops that can handle paperwork with one less employee. The pressured parties are service providers relying on small businesses for outsourced paperwork, bookkeeping, and operations, as their first drafts are being replaced by conversational interfaces.

Since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, OpenAI's enterprise line initially focused on large clients and interfaces. In May 2026, small business usage was separated out, with 4 million people using it for starting and operating businesses in March. In July, there was a small business plan, and in September, they connected with the U.S. Small Business Development Center's consultant network, training about 150 people with a goal of covering at least 1,000 businesses on-site. In October, this series aims to turn the same batch of use cases into on-site videos, rather than releasing another model.

Revenue still comes from subscriptions and tokens, not from video fees. Small businesses do not have procurement departments; the decision-makers are the owners. Paperwork, inquiries, taxes, social media, and copywriting were previously outsourced or done in the evenings. OpenAI uses the restaurant menu comparison as a demonstrable task, raising the output of ChatGPT Work and Codex from one-third in April to two-thirds in August. Trainers are entering existing development centers without building their own outreach teams.

A comparison can be made with Intuit using QuickBooks for small business bookkeeping subscriptions, and Meta directly providing ad backends for merchants without marketing departments. Both are alternatives to outsourcing the first draft. OpenAI is in a phase of expanding usage rather than replacing accounting licenses. The 4 million active and preparatory users are already present, and the series of videos serves as shareable proof of previously undisclosed on-site cases.

Structurally, this is the first half of technological replacement. Small businesses do not lack another software menu; they lack dedicated positions. Conversational interfaces reduce the cost of the first drafts for finance, compliance, and copywriting to a single subscription. The replacement stops at drafts and price comparisons; tax signatures, hiring, and store responsibilities remain with the owners. Service providers lose the initial drafts sold by the hour, not the licenses themselves.

  1. Small shops do not lack software; they lack dedicated positions.

  2. The first draft is consumed by subscriptions, but signatures remain with people.

  3. Usage occurs first; videos are merely evidence afterward.
