Bitwise's Hougan Claims Entry into DeFi Summer 2.0

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan stated on the Paul Barron Network that the market will eventually recognize the growth potential of DeFi, which he refers to as DeFi Summer 2.0, with usage potentially increasing tenfold.

His reasoning is based on the fact that protocols have survived multiple bear markets without disappearing, and the technology and ecosystem have become stronger. With clearer regulatory frameworks and institutions beginning to engage, the transaction proof usage on the Robinhood Chain could rise quickly. Uniswap's active addresses are reported to be around 1.2 million, with the increase mainly coming from this brokerage layer two launched in July. This chain allows users to swap tokens, tokenized stocks, and physical assets on Uniswap, and also connect positions to protocols like Morpho and Aerodrome.

Hougan estimates Uniswap's annualized fees to be around $120 million to $130 million, with the latest transactions potentially reaching $200 million. He also believes that Robinhood's competitors will quickly launch their own chains or on-chain trading. Bitwise continues to issue ETFs, but he stated that in the next decade, the company's on-chain business will surpass other channels. This aligns with his July assessment that the next bull market will be driven by the convergence of stablecoins, tokenization, and institutional-grade DeFi.

The tenfold increase is a projection, not a reflection of current market data. The concentration of active addresses and single-chain fees on Uniswap indicates that the incremental growth is first occurring within the protocols embedded by brokerages, rather than all legacy pools exploding simultaneously.

From a market mechanism perspective, buying is based on the mapping of "brokerage users = tenfold DeFi usage"; selling involves older governance tokens that are disconnected from retail trading. Beneficiaries are AMMs and lending protocols that have received traffic from Robinhood; those under pressure are second-tier DeFi projects without distribution channels. Funds are shifting from pure public chain narratives to pools that can be opened with a single click by brokers.

The second summer referred to by institutions initially involves pouring stock trading into ready-made automated market makers.

Hougan manages asset management, and the products sold require a growth story that can be documented. The DeFi Summer of 2020 relied on permissionless mining and token incentives; what he refers to as 2.0 now relies on brokerages directly onboarding compliant users to Uniswap. The tenfold usage is extrapolating the address curve on the Robinhood chain to all brokerages that follow suit. The fee increase from $130 million to $200 million is contributing to the burn mechanism for UNI.

The capital path has already changed: ETFs are bringing Bitcoin into advisory accounts, while on-chain stocks are directing the same batch of users into AMMs. Bitwise is also looking at this chain because index companies cannot remain solely within exchange-traded funds. Morpho and Aerodrome are mentioned because brokerages need lending and incentive layers, not just a conversion window.

This mirrors the liquidity mining summer of 2020, as well as the transaction migration after PayPal and Robinhood made cryptocurrencies a button. The industry is in a phase where distribution rights are shifting from wallets to brokerage apps. Those included in the account opening process will be the first to capture the molecules of the second summer; protocols not included remain valued in bear market terms.

Structural changes indicate a transfer of pricing power. The mechanism is: once regulation allows tokenized stocks to be traded 24/7, traffic will no longer first inquire about public chain beliefs, but rather which AMM has already been embedded in the interface. Usage can increase tenfold, but governance tokens do not need to synchronize tenfold unless the fee switch has been turned on.

  1. The second summer relies on account opening buttons, not new mining formulas.

  2. Brokerages connecting to a chain will see active addresses first concentrate on embedded protocols.

  3. When institutions mention tenfold, they are looking for molecules for their own products.
