Coinbase Tokenized Stocks Launch Natively on Base Chain

Coinbase has announced that its issued tokenized stocks are now natively launched on the Base chain, built on the B20 standard. These stocks are held 1:1 by regulated custodian Alpaca under a bankruptcy isolation structure, allowing token holders to have direct ownership of the underlying stocks.

Non-U.S. users in globally compliant jurisdictions can access U.S. stock exposure without a brokerage account or settlement delays, using just a wallet and internet connection, and can trade anytime in a 24/7 AMM pool. The first stocks supported include those of Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet.

As standard B20 tokens, tokenized stocks can be freely held, transferred, and traded without whitelisted wallets or platform lock-ins. Users can use tokenized Nvidia stocks as collateral to borrow on Aave or deposit Apple stocks in decentralized exchanges to earn yields. Dividends and stock splits are handled through an on-chain multiplier mechanism. Ecosystem projects like Aerodrome and Aave have already supported the B20 standard. Coinbase stated that more tokenized stocks will be launched in the coming weeks and will continue to push for the on-chain integration of other real-world assets.

Market mechanisms indicate that event-driven factors are accelerating the on-chain transition of traditional assets. Capital flows into the Base ecosystem and related DeFi protocols, benefiting Coinbase, Base, and liquidity providers for tokenized stocks, while traditional brokerage cross-border channels face pressure. Stocks are transitioning from static holdings to programmable liquidity units, potentially enhancing on-chain capital efficiency.

Coinbase, through the Abu Dhabi Global Market regulatory framework and Alpaca custody, has brought U.S. stocks on-chain with a 1:1 bankruptcy isolation structure, emphasizing direct ownership rather than synthetic exposure. The B20 standard expands ERC-20, specifically designed to handle corporate actions like dividends and stock splits, reducing friction for DeFi integration.

In terms of capital pathways, institutional market makers buy stocks and hold them in custody, while Coinbase issues corresponding tokens, allowing non-U.S. users to trade and engage in collateralized lending 24/7. Similar to previous pathways for government bonds and stablecoins, stocks are becoming the next scalable real-world asset (RWA). We are currently in a phase of "compliant custody + on-chain programmability" integration.

Compared to traditional brokerage attempts at stock tokenization like Robinhood, Coinbase leverages its exchange and the Base ecosystem to achieve deeper DeFi composability.

This fundamentally represents a restructuring of the industry chain. The mechanism involves compressing traditional clearing and custody processes into on-chain tokens, making stocks composable DeFi primitives, and facilitating capital flow from centralized accounts to self-custody and protocol layers.

  2. 1:1 custodial real ownership is more trustworthy than synthetic exposure.

  3. The next wave of DeFi growth will come from turning traditional assets into liquidity fuel.
