Open-source project OpenMausBot, the successor, has more than 11,000 stars, positioning itself against Grok Bot

The GitHub open-source project OpenMausBot (formerly OpenGrokBot) has surpassed 11,000 stars. The project is positioned as an open-source alternative to Grok Bot, running the model, computer and data locally on the user's machine.

Its underlying system directly invokes Claude Code, Codex, Grok CLI and others already installed on the user's local machine, without additional API fees. Each contact in the sidebar is an independent agent, can be assigned different tasks, and supports integrations such as OpenRouter.

Each bot can be configured with an independent local VM or cloud Linux desktop, and data and keys are stored in the local ~/.openmausbot directory. Key operations are executed only after user approval. Through Composio and MCP, the project supports application authorization for Gmail, GitHub and others, and also allows multiple bots to be configured with one click through Markdown files.

ABAB AI Insight

OpenMausBot open-sources the official Grok Bot's multi-bot chat interface form and moves the execution environment from the cloud to the local machine. Users can directly use already subscribed CLIs instead of being billed through a single model account.

Each bot is configured with an independent work environment and approval mechanism, allowing the user to control the scope of operations. Data is stored in a local directory, reducing ongoing reliance on external services.

From an architectural path perspective, the project connects different CLIs through standardized event streams and centralizes application integration in tools such as Composio. This allows the same interface to dispatch different engines such as Claude, Codex and Grok.

Structurally, this is an open-source implementation that shifts a personal agent workspace from a hosted service to a local-first approach. It retains the multi-bot collaboration form while returning control over model selection, the computer and data to the user's local machine.

ABAB News · Laws of cognition

  1. The project combines a multi-bot interface with local CLI invocation, avoiding an additional API intermediary layer.

  2. Each bot is equipped with an independent environment and approval gate, and operations require user confirmation.

  3. Data and keys are stored by default in a local directory rather than on a remote service.
