1. The first point to clarify is that T&T is not an American-founded supermarket. It is a Canadian Asian grocery chain now expanding aggressively into the United States.

T&T Supermarket was founded in the Greater Vancouver area of British Columbia in 1993. Its principal founders were Taiwanese immigrant Cindy Lee and her husband Jack Lee. The exact year of immigration is inconsistent across published sources. A frequently cited biography gives 1976, while another educational account gives 1972. The exact year therefore remains uncertain.

That immigrant experience directly informed T&T's product concept. As a mother of three, Cindy found Asian grocery shopping fragmented across small Chinatown stores and inconvenient for family life. Tina Lee has described her mother's original aspiration as creating something like an “Asian Safeway”—a modern, one-stop supermarket where an Asian household could complete its grocery shopping.

The original insight was consequently deeper than “sell Asian groceries.” It was:

take a fragmented, community-based Asian grocery ecosystem and redesign it around the expectations and convenience of a modern North American family supermarket.

4. Cindy's formal background was in accounting, not supermarket operations.

Public professional records associate Cindy Lee with National Chengchi University in Taiwan and an accounting background. She subsequently performed bookkeeping or related financial work in Canada. The precise degree title and graduation year are not well documented publicly.

That background contrasts sharply with her own description of herself in 1993. She later acknowledged that she had neither meaningful supermarket expertise nor mature management experience when T&T opened.

Her real education in retail therefore occurred after the company was launched. Managing two new supermarkets, roughly 200 employees, purchasing, inventory, perishables, staffing, service and cash flow became an extraordinarily expensive form of on-the-job management training.

5. Jack Lee was not merely “the founder's husband”; he helped connect the grocery opportunity to a commercial-real-estate requirement.

T&T's current corporate history names both Cindy and Jack Lee as founders. Cindy was the founding CEO and dominant operating figure, but Jack played a structural role in creating the opportunity.

Cindy later explained that one immediate reason she entered the supermarket business was that Jack wanted to develop President Plaza, an Asian shopping centre in Richmond, and needed a supermarket anchor tenant.

T&T therefore emerged from the intersection of two needs:

Cindy recognized the consumer need for a modern one-stop Asian supermarket;

Jack's commercial project needed a traffic-generating grocery anchor.

Later reporting describes Jack as having wholesale-business experience and helping connect the venture to investors and industry resources.

6. The company nearly failed almost immediately.

In one of Cindy's most revealing accounts of T&T's early history, she said the company opened two supermarkets only about a month apart and suddenly had roughly 200 employees. The first six months were disastrous, and the company lost approximately two-thirds of its capital, raising fears of bankruptcy.

This is important because T&T today looks like a sophisticated, professionally managed chain. Its original model was not perfected on the first attempt.

Cindy and Jack connected with Uni-President and subsequently obtained investment and operating support from Tawa. The family-oriented explanation emphasized by the company today is that T&T represents the names of Cindy and Jack's daughters, Tina and Tiffany.

8. T&T's real competitive barrier was turning an “ethnic grocery store” into a full destination supermarket.

By 2009, typical T&T supermarkets were already roughly 35,000 to 45,000 square feet, making them substantial supermarkets rather than neighborhood specialty stores. T&T is therefore better understood as a combination of:

9. Loblaw's 2009 acquisition was the most consequential capital event in the company's history.

In July 2009, Loblaw announced an agreement to acquire all of T&T's common shares for approximately C$225 million. About C$191 million was funded in cash, with the remainder represented by preferred shares whose value was linked to the future performance of T&T.

For the 12 months ended June 30, 2009, T&T generated approximately C$514 million in sales. It had 17 stores and four distribution centres—three in Vancouver and one in Toronto—around the time the transaction was announced.

In a 2026 Loblaw-affiliated interview, Tina said T&T's U.S. journey could be traced to an email in 2016. The project was subsequently delayed, including by the COVID period, before the first American store finally opened in 2024.

The first U.S. store opened in Bellevue, Washington, in December 2024, occupying about 76,000 square feet in a former Walmart location.

The second opened in Lynnwood, Washington, in November 2025, at roughly 30,000 square feet in a former Sprouts Farmers Market.

The third—and the first in California—opened at Westgate Center in San Jose on June 18, 2026, at roughly 55,000 square feet, again in a former Walmart space.

The large variation among 30,000-, 55,000- and 76,000-square-foot stores demonstrates that T&T is willing to adapt the format to available real estate rather than insist on a single standardized box.

The choice of real estate is also revealing. Bellevue and San Jose reused Walmart spaces; Lynnwood reused Sprouts; Newark is planned for part of a former Macy's.

T&T is therefore emerging as a potential new kind of shopping-centre anchor: a food-driven Asian lifestyle destination capable of repurposing large boxes vacated by traditional mass merchants and department stores.

14. San Jose is the most important validation point so far because it produced a record at the Loblaw group level.

During Loblaw's second-quarter 2026 reporting, management disclosed that the San Jose T&T generated the highest first-week sales of any new store opening in Loblaw history.

That changes the U.S. story from social-media enthusiasm around a popular Asian grocer into a result material enough to attract attention at the parent-company capital-allocation level.

Loblaw management subsequently described T&T as one of the company's most exciting growth opportunities and said additional California stores were planned.

The Newark opening date illustrates how rapidly these plans can change. June and early July 2026 reporting pointed to late or winter 2027, while Tina's July 23, 2026 Loblaw-affiliated interview referred to a 2028 target. The timing is therefore inconsistent across public sources and may have slipped.

In that same interview, Tina identified San Jose as T&T's third U.S. store and the company's 40th store overall. Other company and industry pages show 38 or 39 because their counts come from different dates. The most defensible reading as of summer 2026 is therefore roughly 40 operating stores, with the exact real-time count changing as new stores open.

15. T&T's most significant achievement is not merely that it built a large Chinese supermarket chain; it altered how mainstream North American retail thinks about Asian consumers.

16. Cindy Lee has no widely documented major personal scandal, but T&T's corporate history includes labor and food-safety controversies.

One important early controversy occurred in 2007, when temporary foreign worker Gui Qiang Zou filed a legal claim alleging that T&T retained his passport and related documents and pressured him to work longer hours for lower wages than originally promised.
