1. The most important distinction is that Firstpost, Network18, Raghav Bahl and Mukesh Ambani occupy different layers of the structure.

Firstpost is a news brand and digital-media platform. Network18 Media & Investments Limited is the listed media group within which Firstpost sits. Raghav Bahl is the entrepreneur who built the Network18 media empire. Mukesh Ambani did not found either Network18 or Firstpost; Reliance Industries began financing the Network18 promoter structure in 2012 and obtained control in 2014. As of June 2026, Network18's promoter group held approximately 56.89% of the company, with control remaining within the Reliance ecosystem.

The cleanest sequence is therefore:

Raghav Bahl built Network18 → Network18 launched Firstpost in 2011 → heavy debt led Network18 to accept Reliance financing in 2012 → Reliance obtained control in 2014 → Firstpost became a Network18 digital-news asset under Reliance control.

There is also a legal-historical nuance. The incorporation history of today's listed Network18 Media & Investments Ltd does not perfectly match the entrepreneurial history usually described as “Raghav Bahl founded Network18.” The corporate vehicle existed earlier and was subsequently transformed by Bahl, Ritu Kapur and their associates into the holding structure for the wider media group. Thus, Bahl is properly regarded as the founder of the Network18 media enterprise, while the narrow corporate-law history of the listed vehicle is more complicated.

2. Firstpost itself does not have one uncontested individual founder in the Silicon Valley sense of the term.

Firstpost went live on May 9, 2011 as a Web18/Network18 project. Contemporary coverage identified R. Jagannathan as the principal editor, Web18 CEO Lakshmi Narasimhan as a key organisational and business leader, and Durga Raghunath among the important product executives. It is therefore more accurate to say that Firstpost was incubated by Raghav Bahl's Network18 and built operationally by the Jagannathan–Narasimhan–Web18 team, rather than to attribute the website solely to Bahl.

The original proposition was distinctly digital-first: explanation rather than mere aggregation, opinion and analysis, a mixture of long and short formats, social distribution and cross-device consumption. It even launched without advertising, prioritising product and audience formation before full monetisation.

That original Firstpost was therefore very different from the post-2023 incarnation. The first version was primarily a digital-text newsroom; the later version became increasingly video-led, presenter-led and focused on international affairs and geopolitics.

3. Bahl's family and educational background helps explain why he always approached journalism partly like a manager and capital allocator.

Public accounts place Bahl's birth around 1963. He did not come from an industrial dynasty or an established media family. Bahl has said that his father was an Indian Administrative Service officer from the Rajasthan cadre, placing his upbringing closer to India's highly educated civil-service and professional class than to hereditary business capital.

He studied economics at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and then pursued an MBA at the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi. His intellectual foundations were therefore economics, management, corporate organisation and business analysis rather than conventional journalism-school training.

This became one of his defining characteristics. Bahl rarely behaved only like an editor. He consistently thought in terms of scale, capital structure, international partnerships, listed companies, joint ventures, brand franchises and cross-media portfolios.

A formative personal episode occurred at age 21. A serious health crisis forced him to undergo four leg operations, ending his life as a university-level squash player and eventually leaving him reliant on a walking stick. Bahl later described the abrupt shift from athlete to physical disability as an early lesson in adversity and recovery.

4. His first professional identity was not journalist but consultant and banker.

Bahl began at A.F. Ferguson & Co., a prominent management consultancy, and subsequently worked at American Express Bank before moving into media.

In the 1980s he became a correspondent and presenter for Doordarshan and then worked with India Today's pioneering video newsmagazine Newstrack. A former colleague quoted by The Caravan remembered that while many peers were principally interested in politics and general news, Bahl was already unusually focused on business.

He later became involved with Business India television projects. The Gulf War and explosion of satellite television around 1990-91 radically changed India's media market. The videotape newsmagazine model was becoming obsolete; Bahl concluded that the future lay in satellite broadcasting itself.

This became the first of several recurring media bets:

consulting and finance → television journalism; video magazines → satellite television; television → internet portals; and eventually television → mobile-first digital media.

His deepest capability was not loyalty to any single medium. It was the ability to recognise when the medium itself was changing.

5. TV18, founded in 1993, was Bahl's real entrepreneurial beginning.

TV18 began largely as a production company, producing programmes for organisations including the BBC and Doordarshan and later supplying Indian business content to Asian business-broadcasting networks.

That was a capital-efficient entry strategy. Owning a full satellite channel in early-1990s India required substantial capital, regulatory access and distribution. Building production expertise first allowed Bahl to reduce early risk.

The decisive breakthrough came through international partnerships.

After restructuring in the Asian business-news market, TV18 formed a relationship with CNBC and created the business-news franchise that became CNBC-TV18. Bahl later argued that association with CNBC provided credibility and helped the company recruit high-quality professional talent.

The resulting “Bahl model” was:

Indian operating team + prestigious global media brand + Indian distribution + local editorial expertise.

Over time Network18 developed relationships with CNBC/NBCUniversal, CNN, Viacom, A+E Networks and Forbes, using a mixture of equity joint ventures, licensing and brand/content partnerships. Reliance's own historical disclosures later highlighted these alliances as a defining feature of the Network18 portfolio.

6. Bahl's greatest achievement was not one successful channel but the construction of a broad media-asset portfolio.

At different points the Bahl-era Network18 ecosystem included CNBC-TV18, CNBC Awaaz, CNN-IBN, IBN7, Colors, MTV-related Viacom18 assets, History TV18, Moneycontrol, Firstpost, IBNLive, CricketNext, Forbes India, BookMyShow and HomeShop18, among other properties. Equity relationships differed substantially across businesses and time periods, so these should not all be interpreted as assets personally owned outright by Bahl.

The distinction between economic assets and influence assets is crucial.

The economic assets consisted of shares in listed companies, broadcasting businesses, joint ventures, websites and digital or commerce platforms.

The “influence assets” were arguably even more powerful:

CNBC reached business leaders and investors;

CNN-IBN reached the political and English-news elite;

Moneycontrol became a gateway to retail investors;

Colors reached mass entertainment audiences;

Forbes provided prestige in the business community;

Firstpost reached emerging digital-native readers.

Network18 therefore became far more than a television company. It developed the ability to reach corporate leaders, investors, politicians, mass-market television viewers and internet users simultaneously.

7. The expansion engine that made Network18 extraordinary ultimately created Bahl's central failure: growth outran cash flow.

During the late 2000s Network18 expanded aggressively across channels, digital properties, regional television, entertainment and other businesses. Television is a high-fixed-cost industry, and many newly launched assets were still consuming capital.

By 2011-12, debt was high, markets had weakened and banks had become reluctant to provide additional credit. Bahl later described the Reliance funding explicitly as a bailout and acknowledged that insufficient cost control had been one of his major mistakes.

This complicates the simplistic narrative that “Ambani suddenly took Bahl's company.”

A more accurate sequence is:

overexpansion created financial stress → Bahl voluntarily accepted structured Reliance financing to stabilise the group → the instruments embedded future conversion rights → Reliance exercised those rights and obtained control roughly two and a half years later.

The 2012 arrangement envisaged roughly ₹4,000 crore of fundraising by Network18 and TV18, including around ₹1,700 crore of promoter contribution, which the Reliance-linked trust helped finance. Network18 simultaneously acquired ETV interests, while Reliance's emerging nationwide broadband business obtained preferential access to Network18 content and distribution assets.

Thus the transaction was never merely a rescue of a television company. It connected capital, content, broadband distribution and regional television assets.

8. The year 2014 was the decisive rupture in Bahl's career. He lost Network18 but emerged with capital and immediately began again.

Reliance announced its move for control in May 2014, and Independent Media Trust completed the acquisition of control on July 7, 2014. Reliance's disclosures identified RIL as the sole beneficiary of IMT.

Mint reported that Bahl exited in a deal valued at more than ₹700 crore to him, although that figure should not be interpreted as a precise statement of personal post-tax cash proceeds.

His outcome was archetypal:

he proved capable of creating enormous enterprise value, but failed to retain ultimate control of the enterprise he had built.

Yet he did not retire. Within months he and Ritu Kapur created Quintillion Media, followed by the mobile-first The Quint in 2015. His new thesis was that television required huge capital, licences and distribution infrastructure, while a mobile internet newsroom could restart from zero using content, technology, video and social distribution.

This was Bahl's second major bet on a change in medium.

9. Ritu Kapur should not be reduced to “the founder's wife”; she has been a co-builder of both media eras.

Kapur attended St. Stephen's College and trained in film and television production. She was one of the early founding members of Network18 and worked on original programming, CNN-IBN's citizen-journalism initiatives and History TV18.

At Network18 the couple intentionally kept responsibilities separate and Kapur remained less publicly visible. At Quint, that balance shifted. She became an increasingly prominent operating leader. After Bahl stepped down as managing director of Quint Digital at the end of 2020, Kapur was elevated to the MD role and continued as a senior executive leader.

A more accurate division of entrepreneurial labour is therefore:

Bahl — capital structure, strategy, partnerships, media-company expansion and public entrepreneurship;

Kapur — content innovation, programming, product development and operational institution-building.

10. Bahl's current assets are no longer Network18 or Firstpost. They sit primarily inside the Quint Digital ecosystem.

As of 2026, Quint Digital Limited's own corporate site identifies The Quint, Global Media Technologies and Quintype Technologies India as owned businesses, alongside Quintype-related joint ventures, strategic investments in Youth Ki Awaaz and The News Minute, a Time Out franchise partnership and an investment in US newspaper group Lee Enterprises.

Therefore his two eras must be separated.

Network18, Firstpost, Moneycontrol, CNBC-TV18 and CNN-News18 are part of Bahl's entrepreneurial legacy but are no longer his controlled assets.

The Quint, Quint Digital, Quintype and associated media-tech investments constitute his current commercial ecosystem.

The business model has also become lighter:

from ownership of a huge portfolio of television and content assets to a combination of digital journalism + publishing/media technology + SaaS-type capabilities + minority investments + brand partnerships.

Bahl also partnered with Bloomberg to build BloombergQuint. That business later brought in capital from the Adani group. Reuters reported that AMG Media Networks acquired 49% of Quintillion Business Media in 2022 and agreed in 2023 to acquire the remaining 51%. Consequently, BQ Prime and the associated business-news operation should no longer be treated as core Bahl-controlled assets.

11. Bahl's second act has produced important successes but has not solved the fundamental economics of news.

His first-era failure was principally one of leverage and cost control.

The second era confronted the inherently difficult economics of digital journalism, setbacks around BloombergQuint's television ambitions, restructuring and the eventual sale of the business-news unit.

The broader pattern across his career is therefore striking: Bahl has repeatedly demonstrated exceptional skill at creating media brands and identifying new formats, while the conversion of editorial influence into highly durable cash flow has remained one of his hardest structural problems.

That helps explain the later emphasis on technology platforms, SaaS-like publishing infrastructure and minority investments that are less directly dependent on advertising-funded journalism.

12. Bahl has also faced regulatory and legal controversies, but investigations and settlements must not be confused with criminal convictions.

SEBI proceedings relating to historical Network18 disclosure issues were settled by Bahl, Kapur and related entities. In a separate PMC Fincorp trading matter, Bahl and Kapur paid approximately ₹61 lakh in 2021 to settle proceedings. A SEBI settlement does not itself amount to an admission of wrongdoing or a final adjudicated finding of guilt.

Indian income-tax authorities searched Bahl's residence and The Quint's premises in 2018. The Committee to Protect Journalists and other press-freedom advocates raised concerns about the implications for independent media, while government agencies characterised the actions as tax and financial investigations. The Enforcement Directorate subsequently opened a money-laundering-related investigation.

The Supreme Court provided protection against coercive action in 2021. In 2023 the Delhi High Court declined to quash the ED proceedings at that stage, regarding the challenge as premature; the court subsequently allowed Bahl and Kapur to travel abroad for specified business purposes.

The responsible conclusion is therefore that these matters constitute significant legal controversies in Bahl's post-Network18 career, but they should not be represented as final criminal convictions.

English: The Ambani Family, Reliance Capital and the Network18 Takeover

13. The essential difference between Bahl and the Ambanis is that one was a first-generation media entrepreneur, while the other became one of India's most consequential industrial dynasties.

The modern Ambani business story begins with Dhirubhai Hirachand Ambani. Born in 1932 in Chorwad, Gujarat, he came from modest circumstances, worked in Aden and returned to India to enter yarn trading. Reliance's corporate history dates the Mumbai yarn-trading operation to 1957. The business later moved into textile manufacturing, and the 1977 IPO of Reliance Textile Industries became a formative event in the company's relationship with India's retail-investor class.

Dhirubhai's most important contribution was arguably not one product but a repeatable business architecture:

move from trading into manufacturing;

integrate backward into raw materials;

use capital markets aggressively;

build at extraordinary scale;

lower unit costs;

and create a broad network of shareholders and institutional relationships.

Mukesh Ambani later extended that model from textiles and petrochemicals into refining, hydrocarbons, retail, telecom, digital platforms, media and new energy.

14. Mukesh Ambani's formation was essentially that of an engineer and family industrial successor, rather than a purely financial dealmaker.

Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani was born on April 19, 1957, in Aden. The family subsequently returned to India and lived in Mumbai; its circumstances in Mukesh's early childhood were far removed from the extraordinary wealth associated with the Ambani name today.

He studied chemical engineering at Mumbai's Institute of Chemical Technology and later entered Stanford's MBA programme. He did not complete the MBA, returning to India to work in the family company. RIL states that he formally joined Reliance in 1981 and became central to its backward integration from textiles into polyester, petrochemicals, refining and oil and gas.

This history helps explain his later style.

Rather than building a conglomerate mainly through passive financial acquisitions, Mukesh has repeatedly preferred to identify a huge market, commit extraordinary amounts of capital to infrastructure, achieve scale and then integrate adjacent layers of the value chain.

Jamnagar followed this logic.

Reliance Retail followed it.

Jio followed it as well.

15. The succession conflict after Dhirubhai's death deeply shaped Mukesh's approach to the next generation.

Dhirubhai died in 2002 without an adequately clear succession architecture for a group of Reliance's size. A severe control dispute subsequently emerged between Mukesh and his younger brother Anil Ambani, eventually leading to a division of the business under mediation by their mother Kokilaben Ambani.

Mukesh retained the core Reliance Industries businesses around refining and petrochemicals and subsequently built Jio and Reliance Retail. Anil received businesses including the then-telecommunications, power and financial-services operations. The trajectories later diverged dramatically, with Mukesh's RIL expanding while much of Anil's business empire contracted under debt pressure.

Reuters has explicitly connected Mukesh's current succession planning with the family's desire to avoid a repetition of the turmoil that followed Dhirubhai's death.

The current structure is therefore more than routine nepotistic succession. It is an institutional response to a formative family trauma: keep the next generation involved, assign clear operating domains, but avoid breaking Reliance itself into separate family empires.

16. Mukesh and Nita Ambani's three children have moved from the category of “heirs” into explicit operating roles.

Mukesh and Nita Ambani have three children: twins Isha and Akash Ambani, and Anant Ambani.

In 2023, all three entered the RIL board, while Nita left the board to devote greater attention to Reliance Foundation and associated philanthropic, educational and cultural initiatives.

By 2026, Mukesh publicly described the division of responsibilities in unmistakable terms:

Isha leads Consumer Businesses; Akash leads Technology Businesses; Anant leads Energy Businesses.

He also said that the generational transfer of day-to-day management was almost complete while he continued to provide hands-on leadership.

Isha studied at Yale and later completed an MBA at Stanford. She was involved in the development and launch of Jio and now plays a leading role across Reliance Retail, consumer brands, digital commerce and cultural initiatives.

Akash studied economics at Brown University. He is Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, Managing Director of Jio Platforms and is involved in assets including JioStar and Reliance Intelligence.

Anant also graduated from Brown and is now an Executive Director of RIL, with major involvement in new energy, energy transition and the Vantara wildlife initiative.

Reliance is therefore not preparing for a conventional single-child succession. The emerging model is joint family stewardship with vertical operating specialisation but without formal fragmentation of the wider group. Mukesh's repeated emphasis in 2026 on an “indivisible” Reliance directly reflects the lessons of the previous generation.

17. Why did Mukesh Ambani want Network18? The strongest answer is not simply “to own news channels”; it is the emerging Jio strategy of the early 2010s.

When the Network18 transaction was structured in 2012, Reliance was building a nationwide broadband network. Contemporary Indian Express reporting explicitly stated that the arrangement gave Reliance preferential access to Network18's content and distribution assets.

That provision becomes far more meaningful when read backward from the later rise of Jio.

A nationwide digital network is more valuable when it also has access to compelling content: news, entertainment, financial information, films, music and other high-frequency consumer experiences.

Network18 already possessed:

business news;

general news;

regional news;

internet properties;

entertainment assets;

Moneycontrol's high-value investor audience;

and Firstpost's emerging digital readership.

The strategic logic therefore appears to have been content + advertising inventory + customer entry points + brands + distribution infrastructure, not merely television ownership. The preferential-access provision is the strongest contemporaneous evidence for that interpretation.

18. Reliance did not initially announce a straightforward takeover in 2012. It used a sophisticated convertible-capital structure.

Independent Media Trust financed Network18 promoter entities through instruments including optionally convertible debentures.

At the time, public statements maintained that Bahl and the existing management would retain control.

But convertible financing gave Reliance a future option to transform economic exposure into control.

In 2014 it exercised that option.

This is the most instructive feature of the transaction:

for Bahl, Reliance capital solved an immediate survival problem;

for Ambani, the financing created an option to control a major Indian media group later.

The capital structure itself was therefore strategic.

19. After 2014 the technically accurate description is “Network18 is controlled through the Reliance ecosystem,” not “Mukesh Ambani personally owns Firstpost.”

Reliance stated that Independent Media Trust completed its acquisition of control over Network18 in July 2014, and that RIL was the sole beneficiary of IMT.

By June 2026, Network18's promoter group held approximately 56.89% of the company's equity. Those shares are distributed among multiple promoter entities and should not be represented as a 56.89% personal shareholding of Mukesh Ambani.

The more accurate chain is:

Firstpost → Network18 → Reliance-controlled promoter structure → RIL ecosystem → Mukesh Ambani as RIL Chairman, Managing Director and central family controller.

That distinction matters because corporate control and direct personal share ownership are legally different concepts.

20. After the 2024 restructuring, news has become more concentrated inside Network18 while large-scale entertainment and sports increasingly sit inside JioStar.

The restructuring involving TV18 and Network18 consolidated more of the group's television and digital news operations inside Network18. In parallel, the entertainment, sports and streaming combination built around Viacom18 and Disney India developed into today's JioStar ecosystem.

Firstpost should therefore no longer be viewed as a central asset of Reliance's entire entertainment empire.

Its position is better expressed as:

Reliance media ecosystem → Network18 news business → Firstpost as an English-language/global digital-news brand.

The centre of gravity for mass entertainment, sports and streaming lies increasingly in JioStar and JioHotstar.

21. Firstpost effectively underwent a second founding in 2023.

Network18 recruited former WION anchor Palki Sharma in 2022. On January 26, 2023, Firstpost launched Vantage, hosted and editorially shaped by Sharma. From inception, the programme explicitly promised global news and geopolitics interpreted through an Indian perspective, with digital-first distribution on Firstpost and YouTube and a subsequent broadcast window on CNN-News18.

This altered the centre of gravity of the brand.

Old Firstpost was primarily a text-led general news website.

The new Firstpost increasingly became an India-based global-news video brand.

Its YouTube views rose from roughly 11 million in January 2023 to approximately 123 million in July; industry reporting attributed much of the acceleration to the video pivot and Vantage.

Firstpost crossed five million YouTube subscribers in 2024. Reliance's FY2025-26 reporting says it subsequently crossed nine million, describing it as a leading Network18 destination for global news.

Sharma's most important contribution was therefore not simply anchoring one programme. She helped redefine what Firstpost was as a media product.

22. Firstpost underwent another leadership transition in 2026, so Palki Sharma should no longer be described as its current managing editor.

Sharma stepped down as Managing Editor in January 2026. Network18's internal communication credited her with playing a major role in creating Vantage and shaping its “global news through an Indian lens” editorial identity. Binoy Prabhakar subsequently joined as Chief Content Officer.

In April 2026, Angad Bhatia, who had been CEO of Firstpost and Creator18, also left to pursue a new venture.

Firstpost has therefore entered a distinct post-Palki phase. The global-news/video/India-lens positioning remains, but the leadership structure that produced its rapid 2023-25 growth has changed.

That creates a major strategic test: if audience loyalty was heavily attached to one anchor, the organisation must now demonstrate that Firstpost itself — rather than a single presenter — is the durable asset.

23. Network18 remains extremely large, but Firstpost's standalone financial performance is not publicly disclosed.

Reliance's FY2025-26 reporting described Network18 as India's leading news network, with approximately 14.1% television-news viewership share and a digital portfolio reaching roughly 300 million people per month, led by Moneycontrol, CNBC-TV18, News18 and Firstpost.

For the quarter ended June 2026, Network18 said its digital properties reached more than 350 million monthly users. Q1 FY27 operating revenue was approximately ₹516 crore, up about 10.3% year on year; operating EBITDA was approximately ₹8 crore, for a margin of roughly 1.5%.

These figures illustrate both Network18's enormous scale and the relatively demanding economics of the news business.

No reliable standalone Firstpost revenue, profit or valuation is publicly disclosed, so assigning the brand a precise independent financial value would be speculative.

24. Network18's commercial model has evolved well beyond conventional television advertising.

The first layer is still television and digital advertising. In Q1 FY27, election-related spending by governments, political actors and public-sector institutions was an important growth driver, while non-government advertising demand across the broader industry weakened.

The second layer is digital traffic and platform-video monetisation. Network18 reported roughly 32 billion social video views during the quarter and highlighted strong YouTube leadership; Connected TV was also becoming a meaningful monetisation channel.

The third layer is subscription. Firstpost is not the principal subscription engine; Moneycontrol Pro is. By 2026 it had surpassed one million paying subscribers.

The fourth layer is fintech and high-value financial services, as Moneycontrol expands beyond journalism into portfolio tools, investment intelligence and related financial products.

A fifth layer consists of events, brand solutions, cross-platform advertising and group-level commercial synergies.

For Firstpost specifically, it is reasonable to infer that digital advertising, video-platform advertising and commercial partnerships are major revenue sources. Network18 does not disclose an audited standalone Firstpost revenue mix, so those elements should not be converted into invented percentage estimates.

Its strategic value may in fact exceed its direct profit contribution.

Within the portfolio:

Moneycontrol owns the investor relationship;

CNBC-TV18 owns much of premium business television;

News18 reaches national and regional mass-news audiences;

Firstpost increasingly serves as an English-language international affairs and geopolitical narrative brand.

25. Firstpost's clearest contemporary editorial identity is the “Indian lens” — simultaneously its strongest differentiation and a source of scrutiny.

When Vantage launched, Sharma explicitly argued that international networks frequently report India through their own editorial frameworks and that India should also have a stronger voice in explaining global affairs to an international audience.

This is, in part, a challenge to the traditional architecture of global news.

Institutions based in London, New York and Washington have historically enjoyed disproportionate power to frame how Asian and Global South events are interpreted.

Firstpost's proposition is to reorganise that conversation around the viewpoint of an increasingly powerful India.

That naturally produces heavy coverage of:

Indian foreign policy;

China and India;

Pakistan;

US-China competition;

Russia and Ukraine;

the Global South;

colonial legacies;

perceived Western double standards;

technology and supply chains;

India's economic and state capacity.

The opportunity is clear: there is a large and expanding audience interested in India's global status and dissatisfied with Western-centric framing.

The risk is equally clear: an “Indian perspective” can move from correcting blind spots to conflating national preference with empirical fact.

Firstpost should therefore neither be dismissed automatically as government propaganda nor treated as neutral merely because it describes itself as Indian-focused. The real test is whether it applies equally demanding standards when reporting on the Indian government, Reliance, the BJP and other domestic centres of power.

26. Several episodes have generated persistent questions about political and editorial independence at Firstpost and Network18.

The first is a 2015 Caravan investigation.

The Caravan reported that a Firstpost article critical of then-Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was removed. Former Firstpost executive editor and co-founder Lakshmi Chaudhry also alleged that she had been told the site should not criticise several of the BJP's most senior figures; she subsequently left the organisation.

Those are reported allegations and personal accounts, not a judicially established formal editorial policy. Their importance lies partly in timing: they came shortly after Reliance gained control of Network18 and therefore became part of the broader debate about ownership and editorial autonomy.

The second episode is Cobrapost's 2018 Operation 136.

Cobrapost used undercover approaches to offer Indian media companies money for content designed to promote Hindutva themes and attack political opponents. Published footage included commercial and advertising personnel associated with Network18/Viacom18, whom Cobrapost said appeared willing to discuss such arrangements.

Indian Express and other outlets confirmed that the operation involved numerous major Indian media companies. Several organisations named in the wider investigation disputed Cobrapost's interpretation, editing or methodology and stressed that proposed deals had not necessarily been consummated.

The accurate conclusion is therefore not that “Network18 was conclusively proven to sell political news,” but that:

the undercover material raised serious questions about the strength of the firewall between commercial incentives and editorial principles, while the methodology and interpretation of the sting were contested by some targeted organisations.

27. A more empirically testable category of criticism concerns factual errors and misuse of images or videos.

In 2020, BOOM found that CNN-News18 and Firstpost had presented an older waterspout video as footage of Cyclone Nisarga. Both organisations subsequently issued clarifications.

In 2022, BOOM found that Firstpost had mischaracterised footage of farmers protesting agricultural imports in Balochistan as a sectarian Sunni-versus-Shia incident involving Iranian aid.

In 2023, BOOM fact-checked a Firstpost claim that Pakistan had denied airspace to an Indian Air Force aircraft carrying earthquake relief for Turkey and rated the claim false.

BOOM's broader analysis of Indian misinformation in 2023 also included Firstpost among media sources responsible for some false or communal claims.

These examples do not mean that all Firstpost journalism is unreliable — Firstpost itself also publishes misinformation debunks — but they illustrate a familiar digital-news problem:

when speed, dramatic geopolitical framing, headline intensity and YouTube engagement are heavily rewarded, the cost of weak verification increases.

28. Network18's deepest structural controversy is not one article. It is the concentration of major news power inside one of India's largest industrial conglomerates.

Reporters Without Borders' Media Ownership Monitor has highlighted concentration and transparency of ownership as major questions for Indian media pluralism. Network18 is particularly significant because its ultimate controlling ecosystem, Reliance, simultaneously has major interests in energy, telecom, retail, digital platforms, entertainment, finance and other regulated industries.

That structure naturally creates potential conflicts:

How does a newsroom investigate its ultimate controlling shareholder?

How does it report Reliance's competitors?

How does it cover government regulation that directly affects the parent group's businesses?

How does it report political actors with whom the controlling business group has important commercial relationships?

Corporate ownership does not, by itself, prove editorial interference.

But the absence of a publicly documented order does not automatically prove that structural incentives are irrelevant.

The central governance question is therefore:

Does the newsroom possess strong enough institutional separation to scrutinise its own shareholder when the public interest requires it?

That is a more useful question than simply classifying individual anchors as politically “left” or “right.”

29. Judged by outcomes, Raghav Bahl's greatest success was helping create the commercial architecture of India's modern private-television industry.

First, he demonstrated that an Indian operator could combine prestigious international brands with genuinely local editorial and commercial capability.

Second, he helped turn business journalism from a specialised segment into a professional television category. CNBC-TV18 in particular became highly influential in the professionalisation of Indian business and markets journalism.

Third, Network18 combined news, entertainment, digital media, financial information, ticketing and regional content in a single ecosystem long before “multi-platform media company” became a standard strategic description.

Fourth, Bahl bet on the internet relatively early. Moneycontrol and Firstpost remain major Network18 digital properties today even though both pre-date Reliance control.

What Ambani ultimately acquired, therefore, was not a random collection of licences. It was a network of valuable audience gateways and media brands that Bahl had spent roughly two decades constructing.

30. Judged by failure, Bahl's most important lesson is that creating outstanding assets and permanently owning them require different capabilities.

Many of his strategic calls were early:

business television;

global brand partnerships;

digital finance;

online news;

mobile-first publishing.

But Network18's balance sheet did not become sufficiently resilient as quickly as its portfolio expanded.

The result is a classic entrepreneurial paradox:

the founder creates valuable assets; growth requires more capital; the founder brings in a far stronger balance sheet; the capital provider ultimately controls the assets created by the founder.

That is arguably the most instructive aspect of Bahl's career from the standpoint of corporate history.

31. For Ambani, Network18's success should not be judged only by immediate media profits. Its larger value lies in integrating news into a vast digital ecosystem.

Reliance now spans connectivity, data, streaming, sports, television entertainment, news, retail and advertising.

Network18 supplies a particularly valuable category of high-frequency users — people who repeatedly consume business, finance, political and regional information.

Reliance's FY2025-26 reporting placed Network18's digital-news reach around 300 million people per month; the 2026 quarterly figures exceeded 350 million. Moneycontrol surpassed one million paid subscribers and Firstpost crossed nine million YouTube subscribers.

Network18 therefore produces not only accounting profit but:

attention;

user relationships;

advertising inventory;

brand authority;

agenda-setting influence;

high-value financial audiences;

and content that complements the wider Jio/JioStar environment.

A substantial part of that influence cannot be captured by a single quarter's EBITDA.

32. Firstpost's present position can be summarised in one sentence: it is not Reliance's largest media asset, but it has become one of the group's clearest attempts to build an India-originated geopolitical news brand for global English-speaking audiences.

Its comparative advantage is not necessarily being faster than Reuters or having a larger global reporting network than the BBC.

It is competing over a different question:

Who gets to explain the world?

Historically, many of the dominant answers have come from London, New York and Washington.

Firstpost is attempting to provide an answer rooted in New Delhi/Mumbai, Indian strategic interests and Indian historical experience.

That aligns with India's growing economic and geopolitical weight, its vast digital population and the expanding significance of the Global South.

But the same positioning creates a higher bar. If the “Indian lens” merely becomes another form of selective storytelling, it will remain a successful positioning strategy rather than a genuinely global journalistic institution.

For the idea to mature into an enduring editorial asset, Firstpost must demonstrate that it can challenge not only Western narratives, but Indian power as well.

33. The full history becomes especially clear when compressed into a timeline.

Around 1957: Dhirubhai Ambani returns from Aden and begins yarn trading in Mumbai, laying the foundations of Reliance.

1977: Reliance Textile Industries goes public, establishing the company's unusually strong relationship with India's retail-investor base. Mukesh is already beginning his long association with the group.

1981: Mukesh formally joins Reliance and becomes increasingly involved in polyester, petrochemicals, refining and large industrial projects.

Late 1980s: Raghav Bahl moves from consulting and banking into Doordarshan, Newstrack and early television journalism.

1993: Bahl establishes TV18 as a television production business.

Around 1998-99: TV18's CNBC relationship matures, creating what becomes one of India's defining business-news franchises.

2000s: Network18 expands rapidly across general news, entertainment, digital media, regional news and internet properties.

2002-05: Dhirubhai's death is followed by the Mukesh-Anil succession conflict and eventual split — the historical backdrop to Mukesh's much more structured current succession process.

May 2011: Firstpost launches as a Network18/Web18 digital-native newsroom, with R. Jagannathan and other executives playing key founding roles.

2011-12: Network18's debt and capital pressures become acute.

January 2012: The Reliance-Network18 financing/ETV/rights-issue structure is announced, including preferential access for Reliance's broadband business to Network18 content and distribution assets.

May-July 2014: Reliance obtains control; Bahl exits Network18.

2014-15: Bahl and Ritu Kapur create Quintillion Media and The Quint, beginning their second digital-media venture.

2015: The Caravan publishes allegations concerning editorial constraints at Firstpost.

2018: Cobrapost's Operation 136 brings Network18 into a broader Indian controversy over commercial willingness to carry partisan political content.

2022: Network18 recruits Palki Sharma to develop a new multi-platform international-news project.

34. Reduced to its most important conclusions, the entire story looks like this.

First, Raghav Bahl is the creator, but no longer the owner.

Network18, Moneycontrol, Firstpost and CNBC-TV18 remain part of his entrepreneurial legacy, but they now sit inside Reliance-controlled Network18. Bahl's present asset centre is Quint Digital, The Quint, Quintype and related digital/media-tech interests.

Second, Ambani is the controller, not the founder.

Mukesh Ambani's decisive role was to deploy Reliance's balance sheet at the moment when Network18's balance sheet was weakest, initially through rescue financing and eventually through control.

Third, Firstpost has effectively been founded twice.

The first founding was the 2011 digital-native text newsroom.

The second was the 2023 reconstruction around Vantage, YouTube, international affairs and an Indian geopolitical perspective.

Fourth, Bahl's exceptional capability is spotting new media formats, forming international alliances and building brands; his principal weakness has historically been expansion discipline and capital structure.

He repeatedly anticipated the next media wave, but ultimately lost the company that embodied his most ambitious first act.

Fifth, Ambani's distinctive capability is capital scale, vertical integration and long-horizon infrastructure investment.

Network18 makes more strategic sense when viewed alongside broadband, Jio, digital advertising, consumer platforms and the wider content ecosystem than when viewed as an isolated collection of news channels. The preferential content/distribution clause in the 2012 transaction is the clearest early evidence of that logic.

Sixth, Network18's central challenge today is not scale but whether extraordinary scale can coexist with credible editorial independence.

It has leading television reach, hundreds of millions of monthly digital users and enormously powerful financial and news brands. At the same time, it is controlled through one of India's most powerful diversified industrial groups. That combination provides exceptional resources and creates unusually demanding governance questions.

Seventh, Firstpost's future depends on whether it can turn the “Indian lens” from a successful YouTube positioning into a durable global journalistic institution.

More than nine million YouTube subscribers demonstrate distribution scale. Palki Sharma's departure tests whether the audience belongs to a presenter or to Firstpost itself.

The long-term test is no longer merely view count.

It is whether Firstpost can build original international reporting;

whether it can develop an institution that does not depend on one star anchor;

whether it can challenge Western framing while maintaining rigorous factual standards;

and, most importantly,

whether it is equally capable of scrutinising the Indian government, Reliance and the ownership structure within which it operates.

That is the fundamental question at which the histories of Firstpost, Network18, the Ambani family and Raghav Bahl ultimately converge.
