The central individual behind the new system, Stewart W. Bainum Jr., is not a conventional newspaper entrepreneur.

He was born on March 25, 1946, in Takoma Park, Maryland, the second of four children of Stewart W. Bainum Sr. and Jane Goyne.

The family fortune originated in hospitality and elder-care businesses.

In his Giving Pledge letter, Bainum Jr. recounted that his father grew up through the Great Depression, sold magazines and newspapers, worked as a plumber’s helper, drove a taxi, built a plumbing business, moved into real estate, and eventually used accumulated capital to build a 24-room hotel with partners in 1957. That business became a predecessor of the Choice Hotels system; a later nursing-home venture became the origin of Manor Care.

Failure pushed him toward a more radical alternative:
