1. The first point to clarify is the meaning of “founder”: the Murdoch family did not found any of the three newspapers named here.

Strictly speaking, The Times, the New York Post, and the Papua New Guinea Post-Courier were all created before the Murdoch family acquired them. The Murdochs’ historical achievement was not founding these publications but acquiring, integrating, financing, modernizing, and placing them inside a global media system.

The actual founder of The Times was British printer and publisher John Walter I. Walter bought the King’s Printing House in Blackfriars in 1784, launched The Daily Universal Register on January 1, 1785, and renamed it The Times on January 1, 1788. Rupert Murdoch did not acquire Times Newspapers Limited until February 13, 1981.

The actual founder of the New York Post was American Founding Father and first U.S. Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The Library of Congress records that Hamilton founded the New York Evening Post in 1801. Murdoch acquired it from Dorothy Schiff only in 1976, roughly 175 years later.

The Post-Courier has no similarly clear single individual founder. On June 30, 1969, the Herald and Weekly Times combined the South Pacific Post and the New Guinea Times Courier into what became Papua New Guinea’s first national daily newspaper. Murdoch’s News Ltd acquired the Herald and Weekly Times in 1987, bringing the Post-Courier into the Murdoch corporate lineage roughly eighteen years after it was created.

For the Murdoch media dynasty itself, it is more accurate to speak of two founding generations: Sir Keith Murdoch as the patriarch who built the family’s initial media power base, and Rupert Murdoch as the architect who transformed that base into a global media empire. News Corp’s own corporate history traces its development to the leadership of both men.

2. Sir Keith Murdoch was the generation that transformed the family from journalists into media capitalists.

Sir Keith Arthur Murdoch was born on August 12, 1885, in West Melbourne. His father, Patrick John Murdoch, was a Presbyterian minister, while his mother, Annie Brown, also came from a Scottish Presbyterian clerical family. His parents had migrated from Scotland shortly before his birth. Keith was the third of seven children and grew up in Camberwell in a large clerical household operating under considerable financial discipline.

This matters because the Murdoch dynasty did not begin with enormous inherited financial capital. Its first generation accumulated resources through education, work discipline, journalism, political connections, management, and eventually ownership. Biographical accounts also link Keith’s Presbyterian upbringing to his powerful work ethic, moral certainty, and belief that newspapers should play an active role in public affairs.

Keith suffered from a serious stammer and was shy as a child. He attended Camberwell State School, a school run by his uncle Walter, and Camberwell Grammar, where he became an outstanding student. Rather than attending university as his father had hoped, he used his shorthand skills to obtain work as a district correspondent for The Age, aided by family friend and publisher David Syme.

A pattern that would continue through later generations was already emerging: journalism served not merely as a profession but as an entry point into networks of politicians, publishers, financiers, and social elites. Keith moved from reporting to editing, management and ownership; Rupert later transformed those inherited resources into multinational corporations; Lachlan’s generation has converted family control into a system based on public companies, dual-class shares and long-lived family trusts.

3. Keith’s formative influences were London, the LSE, Lord Northcliffe, and political journalism.

After roughly four years in local journalism, Keith saved about £500 and traveled steerage to London in 1908. He did not establish a major London journalism career at that point, but he attended lectures at the London School of Economics, read extensively, and developed an interest in the liberal sociological ideas of L. T. Hobhouse, while also receiving treatment for his speech impediment.

Back in Australia, he moved into parliamentary reporting and developed ties with political figures including Andrew Fisher, Billy Hughes, and George Pearce. He became a founding member of the Australian Journalists’ Association in 1910 and joined the Sydney Sun as its Melbourne political correspondent in 1912. Journalism was already becoming a route into political power rather than simply a mechanism for observing it.

World War I became his first major breakthrough. After visiting Gallipoli in 1915, Keith wrote an approximately 8,000-word letter to Prime Minister Andrew Fisher criticizing British military command. The letter contained errors and exaggerations that were later acknowledged, but it had substantial political impact and helped transform Keith from a reporter into a media figure capable of influencing government decisions.

He subsequently developed a close relationship with British press baron Lord Northcliffe. Northcliffe’s model emphasized circulation, headlines, pictures, emotional appeal, campaigning journalism and proprietor power. Keith later adopted many of those methods at the Melbourne Herald, drawing heavily on the commercial logic of papers such as the Daily Mail and Evening News.

Keith became chief editor of the Melbourne Herald in 1921, a director in 1926 and managing director in 1928. He expanded pictures, sport, human-interest journalism, political campaigning, staff recruitment and broadcasting interests. The combination of popular content, new technology, political intervention and multi-platform expansion later became one of the defining patterns of Rupert Murdoch’s own career.

By around 1949, Keith had secured important interests in Adelaide’s News and sought to ensure that his family retained an independent newspaper base after his death. He died on October 5, 1952, leaving an estate worth roughly £400,000. More important than the cash were the family’s interests in the Adelaide paper, the accumulated management expertise, political network and idea that newspaper ownership could itself constitute a form of power.

4. Rupert Murdoch inherited an opportunity rather than starting from nothing—and then multiplied it on an extraordinary scale.

Keith Rupert Murdoch was born in Melbourne on March 11, 1931. By then his father was one of Australia’s most prominent media executives, while his mother Elisabeth Greene later became a renowned Australian philanthropist. Rupert therefore entered adulthood with substantially greater social status, educational resources, political access and media connections than his father had possessed at the same age.

Rupert received an elite education and studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Worcester College, Oxford. His Oxford years also exposed him to British political and media networks. Historical accounts note that his youthful political orientation was considerably more Labour-leaning than the conservative identity with which his later media empire became associated.

He then spent time as a sub-editor at Britain’s Daily Express, obtaining direct exposure to the operations of a large commercial newspaper. Following his father’s death in 1952, he returned to Australia; by 1953, at only twenty-two, he was editor and publisher of the Adelaide News and a member of the News Limited board.

The most accurate description of Rupert is therefore not “self-made founder,” but an heir who received a small but genuine media-capital base and multiplied it through acquisitions, leverage, reinvestment, technological change, aggressive management and international expansion. Australia’s National Portrait Gallery describes the Adelaide News as the small newspaper that became the starting point for his global News Corporation.

The Three Newspapers and Global Expansion

5. Australia was the laboratory in which Rupert proved he was more than a passive heir.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Murdoch developed a recognizable acquisition formula: purchase distressed, undervalued or strategically located newspapers, then drive circulation through sharper headlines, crime, sport, entertainment, popular presentation and more aggressive commercial management.

News Limited bought the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror in 1960, giving Murdoch a foothold in Sydney. His more consequential move came in 1964, when he launched The Australian, the country’s first national daily newspaper. That transformed him from a regional proprietor into the owner of a national political platform.

The logic that later defined the empire was already visible: mass-market outlets could generate scale and attention, while national or elite publications could create political and institutional influence; a strategically influential publication did not necessarily have to maximize short-term profit. The later history of the New York Post illustrates this principle particularly clearly.

6. With The Times, Murdoch did not create a newspaper—he acquired one of the most important institutional brands in British journalism.

By 1981, The Times had already passed through the Walter family, Lord Northcliffe, the Thomson organization and other owners. High production costs and industrial conflict had placed enormous pressure on Times Newspapers; publication of its titles was suspended from November 1978 until November 1979. Rupert Murdoch acquired Times Newspapers Limited on February 13, 1981.

Strategically, the transaction was much larger than the addition of one newspaper. Murdoch already controlled mass-market British titles including the News of the World and The Sun. The Times gave him access to a readership concentrated in politics, diplomacy, finance, culture and the establishment. In portfolio terms, it placed mass-attention assets and elite agenda-setting assets under one ownership structure.

In 1986, News International shifted newspaper production to a technologically advanced facility at Wapping, triggering a bitter industrial confrontation involving nearly 6,000 print workers. Critics view Wapping as an aggressive attack on organized labor; from a business-history perspective, it accelerated the move of British newspapers away from the traditional Fleet Street production system toward computerized composition, modern printing and lower fixed costs.

In the digital era, The Times became an early and determined adopter of paid online content. Its websites moved behind a paywall in 2010. By the end of fiscal 2026, The Times and The Sunday Times together had approximately 773,000 subscribers, including roughly 681,000 digital subscribers under the company’s reporting definition, which includes TLS-related digital subscriptions. The value of the business therefore increasingly comes from recurring subscriber relationships rather than print circulation alone.

7. The New York Post evolved from a long-term loss-making influence asset into a large digital mass-market brand.

Founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1801, the Post passed through numerous owners. Under Dorothy Schiff from 1939 to 1976, it became a commercially important New York tabloid associated with a comparatively liberal editorial tradition. Murdoch acquired the paper in 1976 for approximately $30 million.

Murdoch pushed it further toward an aggressive New York tabloid model built around crime, celebrity, sports, gossip, striking headlines and strong political positioning. Pew Research Center memorably described its product as a mixture of “gossip, grit, and conservative ideology.” Page Six, developed from 1977, became one of its most durable entertainment and celebrity brands.

Financially, however, the Post was long a difficult asset. U.S. newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership rules forced Murdoch to sell it in 1988 for about $37.6 million. When the newspaper approached collapse in 1993, he bought it back for roughly $25 million after obtaining an FCC waiver. Political figures including New York Governor Mario Cuomo supported preservation of the paper, illustrating that the Post’s significance already extended beyond its profit-and-loss account.

News Corp says that only in fiscal 2022 did the New York Post post historic results and contribute positively to profitability, possibly for the first time since Hamilton founded it. Murdoch therefore tolerated decades of weak economics because the title provided political relevance in New York, a nationally visible brand, entertainment influence and strategic audience reach.

Today the Post is far more than a printed tabloid. Its digital network includes NYPost.com, PageSix.com and Decider.com; in 2026 the company extended the model to the West Coast with the launch of the California Post. During the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, the Post Digital Network averaged roughly 86.5 million monthly unique users.

8. The Post-Courier is economically small within the empire but unusually important as a regional influence asset in the Pacific.

The Post-Courier was created on June 30, 1969, through the combination of the South Pacific Post and New Guinea Times Courier, becoming Papua New Guinea’s first national daily. Because this preceded PNG independence in 1975, its historical record spans the transition from late colonial administration through independence and modern state-building.

Its owner at the time was the Australian Herald and Weekly Times, not Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Only after News Ltd acquired the Herald and Weekly Times in 1987 did the Post-Courier enter the Murdoch corporate lineage.

The Post-Courier’s own current website says the newspaper is majority-owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp and claims a circulation of approximately 41,000, describing itself as the largest-selling Pacific Island newspaper. Those figures are publisher-reported; public information is limited / its exact current ownership percentage and directly comparable independently audited circulation cannot be confirmed from the available public material. Earlier media-freedom reporting likewise described News Corp as the majority owner with local minority shareholders.

Its strategic value is therefore different from that of The Times or The Wall Street Journal. It is a small asset in consolidated News Corp financial terms, but in a relatively small national media market a long-established national daily can have institutional influence substantially greater than its revenue would suggest. Debate in PNG over foreign media ownership has repeatedly identified the Post-Courier’s News Corp ownership as an example of this structural issue.

Assets, Capital, Business Model, Turning Points, Controversies, and Current Position

9. The modern Murdoch ecosystem must be divided into two separate listed corporations: News Corp and Fox Corporation.

In 2013 the old News Corporation was split. The new News Corp received newspapers, information services, publishing and certain Australian assets, while most entertainment and television operations went into 21st Century Fox. In 2019, Disney completed its acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets in a transaction valued at approximately $71.3 billion. Before completion, Fox News, Fox broadcasting, Fox Sports and Fox Television Stations were spun into the new Fox Corporation.

Consequently, the legal ownership distinction matters. The Times, New York Post, Wall Street Journal and HarperCollins are part of News Corp; Fox News, Fox Sports, Tubi and the Fox broadcast network are part of Fox Corporation. Fox News is not a News Corp subsidiary. The two groups remain associated with the Murdoch family because of overlapping family control, Lachlan Murdoch’s leadership and their shared history.

News Corp’s principal economic pillars now include Dow Jones—owner of The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, Investor’s Business Daily, Factiva, Dow Jones Risk & Compliance and OPIS—alongside Digital Real Estate Services, including REA Group and Realtor.com/Move; HarperCollins, with more than 120 publishing imprints; and News Media, which includes News UK, News Corp Australia and the New York Post.

News UK itself extends well beyond newspapers, encompassing The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun, Times Radio, talkSPORT, Virgin Radio UK, Talk and the TLS. The newspaper brands have therefore become platforms for audio, radio, membership, events and digital content.

10. The core of Murdoch family power is not 100% economic ownership; it is concentrated voting control over public companies.

News Corp is a listed corporation, not a privately owned Murdoch company. Its governance has long been shaped by a dual-class share structure, with Class B shares carrying voting power and the family concentrating a large proportion of those voting shares. This allows the family to exert substantial control without owning a majority of the company’s total economic equity.

The structure changed significantly following the 2025 settlement of the Murdoch Family Trust dispute. News Corp and Fox announced that Prudence MacLeod, Elisabeth Murdoch and James Murdoch would cease to be beneficiaries of trusts holding News Corp or Fox shares, while long-term trusts would continue for Lachlan, Grace and Chloe Murdoch.

The official arrangement gives Lachlan Murdoch sole voting control over the relevant shares held through LGC Holdco via a managing director appointed by him, with the remaining-beneficiary trust structure extending to 2050. By the end of fiscal 2026, LGC Holdco beneficially owned roughly 34.5% of News Corp’s Class B shares, while the agreements also contain a mechanism limiting combined family and trust voting power around the 44% level.

Reuters reported that Prudence, Elisabeth and James each received approximately $1.1 billion under the 2025 settlement, bringing an end to litigation over Rupert’s effort to alter succession arrangements and secure Lachlan’s future control. The settlement therefore represents the real transition from Rupert’s personal rule to Lachlan’s institutionalized control.

This is why the Murdoch family’s most important “asset” is not merely personal wealth. It is control itself: voting rights, trusts, board positions, cross-platform brands, editorial reach and durable audience relationships. That conclusion follows directly from News Corp’s dual-class governance structure and the 2025 trust settlement.

11. The business model has evolved from newspapers and advertising into a diversified system of subscriptions, data, property platforms, intellectual property, advertising and influence.

News Corp generated approximately $9.03 billion of revenue in fiscal 2026. Dow Jones contributed roughly $2.497 billion, Book Publishing about $2.288 billion, News Media approximately $2.227 billion, and Digital Real Estate Services about $2.016 billion. News Media therefore represented only about one-quarter of consolidated revenue.

Those figures explain why describing modern News Corp simply as a newspaper company is misleading. Its growth economics increasingly depend on Dow Jones professional information and subscriptions, REA/Realtor.com property platforms and HarperCollins intellectual property, even though newspapers continue to provide disproportionate political, cultural and brand influence.

Within News Media’s roughly $2.227 billion of fiscal 2026 revenue, circulation and subscriptions contributed about $1.175 billion, advertising approximately $804 million and other revenue roughly $248 million. Reader payments therefore now exceed advertising revenue in the segment.

The Times paywall, Dow Jones and Wall Street Journal subscriptions, professional databases, risk-and-compliance products and OPIS energy-price information are all variations on the same strategic idea: convert transient audience attention into recurring subscription revenue and transform journalism into decision-making and workflow infrastructure.

The company has also learned to charge technology platforms for journalism. In 2021, News Corp announced multi-year content arrangements with Google and Facebook, reflecting a shift from the classic model in which advertisers financed newspapers toward one in which digital distribution platforms can also pay for professional news content and rights.

At the same time, News Corp has been shedding capital-intensive legacy assets. In 2025 it completed the sale of Foxtel to DAZN, receiving loan repayments and retaining an approximately 6% minority interest in DAZN. This supports the view that capital is increasingly being concentrated in information subscriptions, digital real estate and intellectual property.

12. Rupert Murdoch’s career was transformed not by one deal but by a sequence of strategic jumps across markets and technologies.

The first was his decision in 1953 to operate rather than liquidate or passively hold the Adelaide News. It gave him a controlled environment in which to prove his operational ability.

The second was the 1964 creation of The Australian, which moved him from regional newspaper ownership into national political media.

The third was the 1969 move into Britain through the News of the World and The Sun, demonstrating that his Australian mass-market newspaper formula could be exported to a much larger English-language market.

The fourth was the acquisition of the New York Post in 1976 and The Times in 1981, placing Murdoch simultaneously inside the American media capital and the British establishment press.

The fifth was the 1985–1986 move from newspapers into American television and the Fox network system. Murdoch became a U.S. citizen in connection with the regulatory requirements surrounding ownership of U.S. television assets, and television, film and cable news eventually produced an economic platform much larger than the original newspapers.

The sixth was the 1986 Wapping transformation, which, despite enormous social and industrial conflict, dramatically modernized the cost and technology structure of News International’s British newspaper operations.

The seventh was the 1987 acquisition of the Herald and Weekly Times, the company once led by Sir Keith, substantially increasing News Ltd’s Australian newspaper concentration and bringing the Post-Courier into the Murdoch system.

The eighth was diversification into HarperCollins, Sky/Fox, Dow Jones, digital property and professional information. Over time, the decisive competitive advantage became not simply owning more newspapers but building a layered portfolio of news, data, entertainment, property marketplaces and intellectual property.

The ninth was the 2013 separation of News Corp and 21st Century Fox and the 2019 sale of most 21st Century Fox entertainment assets to Disney for about $71.3 billion, monetizing decades of entertainment expansion while retaining strategically important news, sports and broadcast assets inside Fox Corporation.

The tenth was succession. Rupert stepped down from the News Corp and Fox chairmanships in 2023 and became Chairman Emeritus; after family litigation, the 2025 trust settlement institutionalized Lachlan’s long-term voting control. The future of the empire now depends less on Rupert’s personal energy than on Lachlan’s ability to balance financial returns, political influence and family control.

13. Murdoch’s greatest achievement was not merely accumulating wealth but turning media ownership into a repeatable form of cross-border power.

His first extraordinary result was transforming a controlling interest in a small Adelaide newspaper into a system spanning Australia, Britain and the United States. News Corp itself describes its history as the growth of a small Australian newspaper business into a company containing globally recognized media and information brands.

Second, the group developed a repeatable portfolio architecture: mass newspapers for scale, elite newspapers for institutional influence, television for reach, sports for high-engagement live audiences, books for long-lived intellectual property, and financial and property information for high-value recurring subscriptions. The present News Corp revenue structure is the financial outcome of that decades-long strategy.

Third, the Murdochs repeatedly adapted to technological disruption—from Keith’s use of pictures and radio, to Rupert’s Wapping production technology and satellite television, to the Times paywall, digital Dow Jones subscriptions, REA, Realtor.com and professional information products. They rarely defined themselves simply as people who printed newspapers.

Fourth, they preserved and monetized institutions far older than their own dynasty. The Times dates to 1785, the New York Post to 1801 and the Post-Courier to 1969. The Murdoch advantage was not inventing those brands but acquiring institutions with existing historical reputations and connecting them to capital, technology and distribution networks.

Fifth, Murdoch demonstrated a willingness to hold strategically influential media even when their direct economics were poor. The decades of losses at the New York Post—and the decision to buy it back after being forced to sell it—are the clearest example. For Murdoch, media value has long incorporated financial return, political position, brand influence, audience access and competitive barriers simultaneously.

14. The major controversies and failures arise largely from the same source as the family’s power: unusually concentrated proprietor control.

The pattern began with Sir Keith. His 1915 Gallipoli letter dramatically increased his political influence but contained errors and exaggerations, making him an early example of the difficult boundary between journalism and direct intervention in military and political decision-making.

A second long-running controversy concerns media concentration and political influence. The family’s ownership of politically important media across Australia, Britain and the United States has generated decades of debate about how much public-discourse power a single private family should possess. In Australia, the 1987 Herald and Weekly Times takeover became a particularly important landmark in debate over media concentration.

A third controversy was Wapping. Nearly 6,000 workers became involved in the 1986 confrontation and thousands lost their jobs. Supporters describe the episode as necessary technological modernization and a challenge to excessively restrictive print-union practices; critics see it as a carefully prepared assault on organized labor enabled by new labor laws. Both interpretations remain part of its historical legacy.

The fourth and most damaging British scandal involved phone hacking at the News of the World. The central newspaper in that scandal was the News of the World, not The Times, the New York Post or the Post-Courier. Parliamentary investigations found serious failures concerning illegal voicemail interception and management awareness. Appearing before Parliament in 2011, Rupert called it the most humble day of his life; the 2012 parliamentary inquiry also strongly criticized group governance and his portrayal of himself as a largely hands-off proprietor.

The fifth category is investment failure. The best-known example is Myspace. News Corp bought it in 2005 for approximately $580 million, but after the social-networking market changed rapidly it was sold in 2011 for roughly $35 million. Murdoch later described the purchase as a major mistake, demonstrating that skill in newspapers and television did not automatically transfer to social platforms.

The sixth controversy comes from Fox. In 2023 Fox News reached a $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems over false claims involving the 2020 U.S. election, and Fox acknowledged court rulings finding certain Dominion-related claims false. Again, this involved Fox Corporation/Fox News rather than News Corp or The Times, but because the Murdoch family controlled both companies, it became one of the most consequential reputational and governance crises in the broader Murdoch ecosystem.

The seventh controversy was succession. Rupert’s effort to alter family-trust arrangements in order to strengthen Lachlan’s future control was challenged legally by Prudence, Elisabeth and James. The dispute ended with the 2025 cash settlement. It exposed a fundamental characteristic of the empire: editorial direction, political positioning and corporate strategy remain unusually connected to family succession rather than being left entirely to professional management.

For the Post-Courier, the principal structural controversy is different. The most significant recurring question is not a major legal scandal but whether a foreign media conglomerate should control an important national newspaper in a relatively small country. PNG debates over foreign media ownership have specifically included News Corp’s majority ownership of the Post-Courier.

15. As of August 2026, the real position of the Murdoch family—and the timeline that best explains it—is now much clearer.

Rupert Murdoch has withdrawn from the highest day-to-day governance roles and is Chairman Emeritus of News Corp and Fox. Lachlan Murdoch is now the central figure of the next generation. Following the 2025 trust restructuring, Lachlan has long-term voting control arrangements over the relevant News Corp and Fox shares held by the family trust structure.

News Corp itself has not faded into a collection of aging newspapers. Fiscal 2026 revenue reached approximately $9.03 billion, with the economic center of gravity increasingly located in Dow Jones, digital real estate and publishing. Meanwhile, brands including The Times, The Sun, New York Post, The Australian and The Wall Street Journal continue to provide political, commercial and cultural influence that cannot be fully captured in segment profit figures.

The Post-Courier remains active in PNG and continues to identify News Corp as its majority owner. In 2026, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape publicly referred to News Corp as the Post-Courier’s parent shareholder while praising continued investment in the business, indicating that the holding remains an operating relationship rather than merely a historical footnote.

Most importantly, as of August 27, 2026, News Corp and Fox remain separate listed companies and have not announced a recombination. Reuters reported that day that newly unsealed court documents and testimony show Rupert’s longstanding interest in potentially recombining the companies has not disappeared. A similar proposal was raised in 2022 and abandoned amid investor opposition. Any renewed combination should therefore be treated as a strategic possibility, not an announced transaction.

The dynasty can be compressed into one sequence: 1885, Keith is born; the early 1900s, he enters journalism; 1921, he takes command of the Melbourne Herald; around 1949, he secures the Adelaide News family base; 1952, Keith dies and Rupert inherits; 1953, Rupert begins running the Adelaide News; 1964, The Australian is launched; 1969, Rupert enters Britain; 1976, he buys the New York Post; 1981, he buys The Times; 1986, Wapping and the Fox era accelerate; 1987, HWT is acquired and the Post-Courier enters the group; the 1990s bring satellite television and Fox expansion; 2007 brings Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal into the system; 2011 brings the phone-hacking crisis; 2013 brings the News Corp–21st Century Fox split; 2019 brings Disney’s acquisition and the creation of the present Fox Corporation; 2023 Rupert becomes Chairman Emeritus; 2025 the family-trust settlement institutionalizes Lachlan’s control; and in 2026 the two companies remain separate even as the possibility of recombination re-enters public discussion.

Ultimately, what the Murdoch family owns is more than a portfolio of newspapers.
