1、The most important distinction is this: Jed Sunden founded the Kyiv Post, but he no longer owns it.

Sunden founded the Kyiv Post in Kyiv in 1995 and owned it until 2009. Ownership then passed to Mohammad Zahoor and subsequently to Adnan Kivan. After Adnan Kivan’s death in 2024, his son Ruslan Kivan took over. As of October 2026, the Kyiv Post website identifies Ruslan Kivan as Publisher, Luc Chénier as CEO, and Bohdan Nahaylo as Chief Editor; the site’s copyright identifies BISNESGROUPP LLC. Any serious analysis therefore has to separate Sunden’s historical legacy from the ownership and management structure of kyivpost.com today.

2、What makes Sunden important is not simply that he founded an English-language newspaper; he executed three successive transformations.

First, he identified an underserved English-language business-information market in post-Soviet Ukraine. Second, he transformed an expatriate weekly into a media group capable of financing Russian-language news magazines, portals, and consumer publications. Third, he converted the credibility of independent journalism itself into a commercial, human-capital, and influence asset. By 2006, KP Media said it operated 11 major projects and employed more than 500 people across newspapers, magazines, portals, and news websites.

3、His business trajectory can be summarized as: self-funded startup → advertising cash flow → content brands and database products → reinvestment of Kyiv Post profits into local-language and internet assets → bond and equity financing → asset sales after the financial crisis.

This was not primarily a personal-brand business based on books, speaking, or consulting. Sunden’s wealth and influence came principally from media operations, digital platforms, capitalization, and exits. In 2010, the Kyiv Post estimated his wealth at about $16.5 million and ranked him ninth among its richest expatriates and eighth among the most influential. That was a press estimate at the time, not an audited net-worth statement and certainly not a reliable measure of his current wealth.

4、His professional identity evolved through several distinct stages: history student → Ukraine researcher → in-flight magazine producer → Kyiv Post founder and publisher → KP Media owner → digital-media and capital-markets entrepreneur → startup mentor/technology-ecosystem participant → organizer of U.S.-Ukraine advocacy and political fundraising.

The consistent thread was less formal journalistic training than a long-standing interest in post-Soviet political transformation, free media, markets, and Ukrainian independence. By 2012, after leaving KP Media, he was listed as a mentor at EastLabs alongside Horizon Capital’s Vasile Tofan, Napster founding chairman John Fanning, and TA Venture’s Viktoriya Tigipko. From 2024 onward, his public activity has increasingly centered on Congress and Ukraine policy.

5、Sunden was born around 1970 and is from Brooklyn, New York.

A 2005 Kyiv Post interview described him as 35; a 2010 profile gave his age as 39 and identified him as a New York native. Reliable English-language accounts consistently associate his background with Brooklyn. In describing his early entrepreneurial circumstances, Sunden presented himself as a young Brooklynite with very little money and a large ambition, rather than as someone entering publishing with major family capital.

6、His secondary education presents an interesting contrast: he graduated from New York’s Stuyvesant High School in the class of 1988.

Stuyvesant is known for mathematics, science, and technology, yet Sunden did not pursue a STEM career or a conventional journalism-school path. A 2010 Kyiv Post retrospective highlighted precisely this contrast: a graduate of a highly technical secondary school eventually became a media entrepreneur in Ukraine.

7、College shaped his geopolitical interests. Sunden attended Macalester College in Minnesota, earned a bachelor’s degree in history, and focused on Soviet and East European history.

He studied from 1988 to 1992, a period encompassing the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of communist regimes in Eastern Europe, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and Ukrainian independence. Sunden later explained that the collapse of communism was one of the biggest stories in the world when he was choosing what to study, which led him toward Soviet history. His eventual move to Ukraine was therefore not simply a commercial arbitrage; a pre-existing historical and regional interest found a commercial outlet.

8、The first decisive turning point came in 1993, when he arrived in Kyiv without initially intending to found a media company.

In Sunden’s own 2005 account, he joined a privately funded project compiling a register of Jewish cemeteries in Ukraine for preservation purposes. A 2010 retrospective likewise says he came after Macalester for a research project. His wife Olga later characterized the work somewhat differently, describing him as having come to research the Holocaust and Babyn Yar for a thesis. The precise description differs, but the common core is clear: historical research, Jewish historical memory, Ukraine, and the move to Kyiv in 1993 were the entry point.

9、He originally expected to return to the United States for further study, but an accidental media opportunity changed the path.

A 2010 account says he heard that a new Ukrainian airline needed an in-flight magazine and produced it for approximately a year. In effect, this became his practical apprenticeship in publishing: rather than joining an established newspaper, he learned content production and commercial publishing directly. Instead of returning to graduate school, he put his savings into an English-language newspaper.

10、This leads to an important point: Sunden was not initially a professional journalist or experienced editor.

He acknowledged that when he chose to start the Kyiv Post, he knew little about publishing and had limited knowledge of journalism. His starting point was closer to that of an entrepreneur identifying a market gap than a reporter turning into an entrepreneur. One of the key figures who brought professional journalistic standards into the Kyiv Post was early editor Igor Greenwald; Sunden later credited Greenwald with establishing Western-style standards that influenced both the newsroom and Sunden himself.

11、The most important publicly documented family-business connection in his later life is his wife, Olga Sunden.

Olga was born in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, entered the Journalism Institute at Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv at age 16, and met Jed through her work. The couple later moved to New York while continuing to support Ukrainian education and journalism. Olga told the Ukrainian Catholic University Foundation that both are practicing Jews and that education and journalism are long-term philanthropic priorities for the family. A New York school profile says they have lived on the Upper West Side since 2014 and have three children.

12、That family context also helps explain Sunden’s later shift from commercial media management toward institutional philanthropy and political engagement.

Education, Jewish communal life, Ukrainian press freedom, and U.S.-Ukraine relations recur throughout his later activities. The American Ukraine Committee’s public biography says he spent many years in Ukrainian Jewish communal leadership, including roughly 15 years in a vice-presidential role; UCU materials independently document the couple’s support for journalism scholarships. The former claim comes from an organization Sunden currently leads and should therefore be treated as a public biographical claim rather than independent third-party verification.

13、The 1995 creation of the Kyiv Post was a classic low-capital startup built around a very clear market gap.

Sunden noticed that cities such as Moscow, Prague, and Warsaw already had English-language newspapers for foreigners, while Kyiv lacked an equivalent mature product. In September 1995, roughly six or seven people worked from a two-room apartment in Kyiv’s Tatarka district; the first issue appeared in mid-October, with the present-day Kyiv Post identifying October 18, 1995 as the official first print date. Retrospectives differ on whether starting capital was roughly $6,000–$7,000 or $8,000, but they agree on the essential point: it came principally from Sunden’s personal savings, supplemented by credit-card financing.

14、The original customer base was not the mass Ukrainian public but Kyiv’s expatriate and international business ecosystem.

In the mid-1990s, foreign companies, aid organizations, diplomats, and international institutions had a substantial presence in Kyiv. Sunden recalled a larger USAID presence and large expatriate teams at companies such as Coca-Cola and Philip Morris. These people were both English-language news consumers and high-value customers for real estate, restaurants, airlines, telecommunications, and business services. The early Kyiv Post was therefore effectively an English-language information gateway, city guide, and B2B/B2C advertising platform. Columbia Journalism Review similarly noted that post-Soviet expatriate papers translated politics, listings, and practical local information into English, which made them attractive to advertisers.

15、The early advertising model was primitive enough that ads were sometimes exchanged through barter rather than cash.

Sunden recalled airlines providing free tickets in exchange for advertising space. By the late 1990s, advertising increasingly shifted to cash and market pricing. Within months, larger advertisers such as Beeper and Utel had signed contracts. By 1999, the Kyiv Post was solidly profitable; 2000–2008 became one of its strongest financial periods, and later print circulation was around 25,000 copies.

16、The Kyiv Business Directory is an excellent small example of Sunden’s commercial thinking.

About six months after the newspaper launched, he reorganized the internal company database used to contact advertising clients and turned it into a Yellow Pages-style Kyiv Business Directory. It began as a newspaper supplement and became a separate product. The logic was simple but significant: data accumulated through ad sales could itself be monetized as an information product. Sunden was therefore already thinking beyond “selling news” toward building local commercial-information infrastructure.

17、One of Sunden’s most consequential business judgments was to treat editorial independence as an economic asset, not merely an ethical principle.

His recurring logic was that when owners manipulate coverage for political or business purposes, they lose reader trust; without reader trust, advertisers lose the reason to pay for access to that audience. In his model, independent journalism → trust → audience → advertiser value formed a commercial chain. This differentiated the Kyiv Post from many Ukrainian media properties owned partly for political influence.

18、Editorial independence did not mean that Sunden personally lacked political views.

He said he protected journalistic judgment on news pages, while institutional editorials and his personal columns clearly reflected his politics. He described himself as a libertarian favoring low taxes, limited government, reduced regulation, free markets, and free speech, while also displaying strong anti-communist views and persistent concern about Kremlin threats to Ukrainian independence. His model was therefore closer to an independent newsroom combined with a transparent, opinionated publisher than to ideological neutrality.

19、Igor Greenwald and the early newsroom were crucial to Sunden’s transition from owner to institution-builder.

Greenwald established a tradition of recruiting young Ukrainian journalists, training them in Western journalistic standards, and promoting them internally. The core team of the later Russian-language newsweekly Korrespondent was drawn from journalists developed at the Kyiv Post; Vitaly Sych and other influential Ukrainian journalists came through this system. The Kyiv Post therefore accumulated not just brand equity and cash flow but a valuable journalistic human-capital pipeline.

20、Sunden then recognized that the profitable English-language niche had an inherent ceiling, so growth required moving into local-language and mass-consumer markets.

He launched Bigmir.net in 2000, the entertainment and nightlife magazine Afisha in 2001, and the Russian-language newsweekly Korrespondent in 2002. Later products included Pink, Idei Vashego Doma, Interier Magazin, and a Ukrainian edition of Stuff, with some home-design titles produced in cooperation with Russian publisher Formax Publications. The strategic logic was clear: use the capital, journalists, advertisers, and operating expertise accumulated at the Kyiv Post to enter a Ukrainian mass market far larger than the expatriate English-language niche.

21、Digital expansion was a second strategic axis, and it began early rather than as a late defensive reaction.

The Kyiv Post says it went online in 1997; Bigmir.net launched in 2000, while korrespondent.net became another important digital news asset. A 2011 account of the KP Media transaction explicitly states that Sunden used profits from the Kyiv Post to move heavily into internet news. The company consequently evolved from a publishing house into a broader media and internet business, reflected in its 2006 renaming from KP Publications to KP Media.

22、By 2006, Sunden had moved from bootstrapped entrepreneurship into capital-markets expansion.

In March, KP Media sold bonds to Western European investors; Sunden said the proceeds helped finance the free newspaper 15 Minutes. In July, the company arranged an equity offering on Ukraine’s PFTS market, planning to place about 20% of its shares and expecting to raise roughly $11 million. Dragon Capital and ABD Capital Ukraine participated, Western portfolio funds were described as the principal buyers, and Sunden said an additional roughly 7% of shares would be allocated to employees.

23、By this stage KP Media was no longer a small newspaper company.

Its major projects included the Kyiv Post, Korrespondent, Afisha, Pink, 15 Minutes, Bigmir.net, and Korrespondent.net, among a total of 11 major projects, and it reported more than 500 employees. KP Media claimed approximately 15% of Ukraine’s magazine market and 50% of the internet market at the time; those market-share figures were company claims rather than independently audited numbers.

24、What Sunden had built was effectively a media flywheel.

The Kyiv Post generated profit and reputation; those profits financed Bigmir.net, Korrespondent, and larger-market products; publications shared journalists, advertising relationships, management, and digital traffic; new brands expanded commercial scale; and bond and equity financing then accelerated expansion. This is why his wealth creation cannot be understood merely by asking how profitable one newspaper was: his central achievement was reusing capital from one successful asset across a portfolio of media properties.

25、The weakness of this model was equally clear: extreme sensitivity to the advertising cycle.

The 1998 financial crisis had already forced retrenchment in some publications. The decisive shock was the global financial crisis beginning in 2008, when Ukraine’s advertising market contracted sharply. Sunden sold the Kyiv Post and Pink and closed or disposed of projects including Novynar, Afisha, 15 Minutes, and Pani. Columbia Journalism Review later noted that English-language expatriate papers were particularly exposed because an economic crisis could simultaneously reduce foreign-company advertising and the foreign professional readership.

26、The 2009 sale of the Kyiv Post was one of the most important capital-allocation decisions of Sunden’s career.

After the advertising collapse, he sold the paper to British-Pakistani businessman Mohammad Zahoor. A later Kyiv Post retrospective put the transaction at about $1.1 million, while Columbia Journalism Review described the figure as just over $1 million. At the time, Sunden explained that the sale allowed resources to be concentrated on KP Media’s internet and other priority operations. He also emphasized his belief that Zahoor would preserve editorial independence.

27、This did not initially mean leaving media; it meant selling the founding brand to preserve a larger group.

After 2009, KP Media still controlled assets such as Korrespondent, korrespondent.net, and Bigmir.net. A 2010 profile still identified Sunden as KP Media’s owner and estimated the company had about 250 employees. Commercially, the Kyiv Post had evolved from the original parent asset into one business unit that could be sold to support larger digital and local-market priorities.

28、The second and more complete exit came in 2011.

Contemporary reporting said Sunden sold his majority stake in KP Media; initial accounts based on sources identified Petro Poroshenko as the buyer and said Sunden had been seeking $15 million–$18 million, although the final transaction price was never publicly confirmed. Interfax-Ukraine later clarified that Petro Poroshenko and Borys Lozhkin’s UMH jointly bought KP Media in 2011. In 2013, UMH acquired Poroshenko’s 50% stake and became sole owner of projects including Korrespondent and Korrespondent.net.

29、Consequently, Sunden does not currently control the Kyiv Post, Korrespondent, or Bigmir.net.

The Kyiv Post was sold in 2009; the core KP Media assets entered the Poroshenko/UMH structure after 2011 and were subsequently reorganized. Describing these today as “Sunden’s assets” would be incorrect. The accurate formulation is: they were commercial media assets he created and controlled; what remains today is founder status and historical influence, not ownership.

30、The Kyiv Post itself subsequently developed an ownership history entirely separate from Sunden.

Mohammad Zahoor owned it from 2009 to 2018, when he sold it to Odesa businessman and KADORR Group founder Adnan Kivan. A 2020 Kyiv Post retrospective said the 2018 price was “much higher than” $3.5 million but did not disclose an exact figure. After Adnan Kivan died in October 2024, his son Ruslan Kivan assumed control of KADORR Group and ownership of the Kyiv Post.

31、In 2021, the Kyiv Post experienced one of the most serious editorial-independence crises in its history—and this occurred more than a decade after Sunden’s departure.

On November 8, 2021, Adnan Kivan abruptly suspended operations and dismissed the newsroom. Journalists said the dispute followed Kivan’s plan to launch a Ukrainian-language edition under an editor he selected, which they regarded as an infringement on editorial independence; they characterized the shutdown as retaliation. Kivan’s public position was that the closure was temporary and that he hoped to reopen the paper “bigger and better.” RFE/RL reported the competing accounts rather than treating the newsroom’s allegations as conclusively established.

32、The long-term consequence was highly significant: part of the former Kyiv Post newsroom went on to build the Kyiv Independent.

Sunden’s earlier institutional legacy therefore effectively split into two lines: one remained with the continuing Kyiv Post brand; another traveled through former staff into a new institution. In terms of real-world impact, this is one of the Kyiv Post’s most important and ironic legacies: it did not merely survive as a website; its newsroom culture also helped generate a major future competitor.

33、The present-day Kyiv Post has been rebuilt under a different management and product structure.

As of October 2026, Ruslan Kivan is Publisher, Luc Chénier CEO, and Bohdan Nahaylo Chief Editor. The website covers War, Ukraine, World, Economy and Business and also operates video, podcasts, analysis, Corruption Watch, and opinion products. Ruslan Kivan has publicly discussed further investment in video, interactive formats, in-depth analysis, investigative journalism, and potentially stronger presences in Washington and London.

34、The Kyiv Post today remains a for-profit media company rather than a foundation-style nonprofit newsroom.

Its About page says most revenue comes from advertising and events, with subscriptions also part of commercial activity. Journalists additionally seek grants for particular editorial projects. The site lists past project sponsors including the National Endowment for Democracy, Justice for Journalists Foundation, Reporters Without Borders, the Danish government, NATO, and others. The distinction is important: the Kivan/KADORR relationship is an ownership and potential financial-backing relationship; grants from donors support particular editorial projects and do not constitute equity ownership.

35、The Kyiv Post’s three-decade financing history is almost a miniature history of the problem of sustaining independent media in Ukraine.

Under Sunden it began with personal savings and advertising, then used profits, bonds, and equity financing to grow. Under Zahoor and the Kivan family it had wealthy owners capable of providing stronger financial backing, while continuing to seek commercial revenue and project grants. The underlying tension has remained constant: independent journalism requires capital, but the owner of that capital can itself become the greatest governance risk to editorial independence. The 2021 crisis exposed that contradiction most dramatically.

36、One of Sunden’s greatest achievements was transforming what began as an expatriate publication into a news institution that participated directly in Ukrainian public politics.

After journalist Georgiy Gongadze was murdered in 2000 and Ukraine entered a major political crisis, the Kyiv Post covered the case aggressively and called for President Leonid Kuchma’s resignation. Sunden later argued that weak press freedom in Ukraine gave the Kyiv Post a far larger political role than comparable English-language expatriate newspapers in Prague or Warsaw.

37、That stance generated genuine pressure at the state level.

On April 11, 2000, Sunden was stopped at Kyiv airport and denied entry into Ukraine. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported contemporaneously that the Foreign Ministry denied responsibility and the security service declined to explain; Sunden suspected the incident could be connected to the Kyiv Post’s criticism of the slow pace of reform. The ban was lifted on April 13 after pressure from the U.S. State Department and U.S. Embassy. Sunden later also recalled repeated tax-police inspections and seriously considering leaving Ukraine.

38、This episode altered Sunden’s position in the industry.

He was no longer simply a foreign entrepreneur and publisher; the independence of his newspaper had become part of a broader diplomatic and press-freedom struggle surrounding Ukraine’s democratic transition. A commercial product had acquired institutional political value, which in turn strengthened the brand’s international reputation and audience trust. CPJ placed the Sunden incident within a broader pattern of state pressure on independent Ukrainian media.

39、The 2004 Orange Revolution marked another high point in the group’s public influence.

KP Publications printed about 50,000 free copies of Korrespondent Extra for protesters on Independence Square and shipped copies to regions experiencing information blackouts. The company also established a working presence near Bankova and kept the Korrespondent.net and Kyiv Post websites updated around the clock. The organization had moved beyond passive commercial reporting and toward functioning as crisis-time information infrastructure.

40、A second durable achievement was talent rather than any single publication.

Journalists trained at the Kyiv Post later moved into Korrespondent and other Ukrainian media. Sunden himself identified this newsroom-development tradition as one of the company’s major legacies. Olga Sunden later similarly argued that a generation of journalists developed in his publishing company went on to form part of Ukraine’s free press. Her statement reflects a family perspective, but it is broadly consistent with documented journalist migration from the Kyiv Post to other outlets.

41、The international recognition later received by the Kyiv Post demonstrates that the institution eventually became larger than its founder.

In 2014, the University of Missouri School of Journalism awarded its Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism to the staff of the Kyiv Post. The school has awarded the medal since 1930 to recognize lifetime or superior achievement in journalism. Because this happened five years after Sunden sold the paper, it should be understood as evidence of an institution he created continuing to produce value—not as a personal award to Sunden.

42、The Sunden era nevertheless had commercial and ethical controversies.

A 2020 Kyiv Post retrospective explicitly noted criticism of his decision to accept paid “massage” advertisements associated with prostitution, as well as high turnover among chief editors. This exposed a tension between the newspaper’s public-interest identity and the economic realities of an early expatriate publication dependent on city classifieds and lifestyle advertising.

43、Another point of debate is that, while Sunden protected newsroom independence, the newspaper’s institutional opinions clearly reflected his libertarian and anti-communist worldview.

This should not simply be labeled newsroom interference because contemporary accounts distinguish news reporting from publisher/editorial opinion. But neither should Sunden be described as an ideologically neutral owner. He actively used editorials and personal columns to advocate low taxes, smaller government, free markets, removal of Lenin monuments, and resistance to Russian political influence. His structure resembled the tradition of an opinionated publisher overseeing an independently reporting newsroom.

44、Sunden also lost a defamation case connected to the controversy over antisemitism at Ukraine’s MAUP university.

Moment’s account of the controversy says Sunden published an editorial denouncing MAUP’s antisemitic campaign and was sued for defamation. He and Ukrainian Jewish businessman Vadim Rabinovitch lost their cases and were required to pay damages and issue public apologies. Sunden argued that Ukraine’s court system at the time suffered from serious integrity problems. The litigation and loss can be established; the fairness of the judgment remains a matter of interpretation.

45、From a business-failure perspective, the largest weakness was not a single editorial error but the cyclical fragility of the media portfolio.

The 1998 crisis forced retrenchment and asset sales; the 2008 crisis produced a much more severe contraction. Sunden had built a rapidly expanding portfolio in an environment of strong advertising growth, but the revenue structure did not become sufficiently countercyclical. When advertising budgets fell, numerous brands came under pressure simultaneously. The model scaled very effectively in expansion but was structurally vulnerable in contraction.

46、Conversely, his willingness to sell assets between 2008 and 2011 can also be seen as capital discipline.

He did not preserve the Kyiv Post indefinitely out of founder sentiment. He sold the paper, then the majority of KP Media, turning years of accumulated brand equity, digital platforms, advertising relationships, and organizational capability into liquid capital value. The final KP Media transaction price remains undisclosed, so the reported $15 million–$18 million amount Sunden had been seeking should not be treated as the actual sale price.

47、One of Sunden’s most valuable non-financial assets has always been his network.

Initially it consisted of expatriates, foreign companies, USAID-linked circles, diplomats, and international business. Media expansion added Ukrainian journalists, advertisers, capital-markets institutions, and local entrepreneurs. After his exit he entered startup-mentoring networks; today he works with the Ukrainian diaspora, Congress, political fundraising, and policy advocacy. In that sense, he has repeatedly done the same thing: convert cross-border information asymmetries and the ability to connect otherwise separate groups into organizational value. The vehicle was once a newspaper, later an internet company, and today an advocacy organization and PAC.

48、As of 2026, Sunden’s most important new institutional role is Founder and Director of the American Ukraine Committee.

The organization says it was established in 2024 as a 501(c)(4) membership organization designed to establish a permanent bipartisan pro-Ukraine presence on Capitol Hill and convert broad support for Ukraine into legislation, funding, and long-term strategic commitments. A related American Ukraine PAC provides campaign support to pro-Ukraine members of Congress.

49、The Committee and PAC should be distinguished carefully.

The American Ukraine Committee is the membership, policy-advocacy, and congressional-outreach organization. The American Ukraine PAC is the federal political action committee. The current Federal Election Commission database shows that the PAC registered on March 6, 2024 and is listed as Active, Quarterly PAC, Qualified, and Unauthorized, under committee ID C00872325.

50、The PAC represents another transformation of Sunden’s influence model: from owning media that shapes public opinion to organizing political money that acts directly on Congress.

In a 2024 interview with The Ukrainian Weekly, Sunden argued that private donations of aid to Ukraine could not match the scale of tens of billions of dollars in U.S. government assistance, meaning that the decisive arena had become Congress. His goal was to aggregate Ukrainian-American and pro-Ukraine donations so that candidates would clearly understand that those funds were associated with their positions on Ukraine.

51、The system is not simply a conventional PAC that collects and redistributes all contributions itself.

The American Ukraine PAC explains that some donations are routed directly to endorsed candidates through Democracy Engine and therefore do not appear in the PAC’s own FEC totals. It also says roughly 80% of overall donations are donor-earmarked to particular candidates. The architecture is explicitly designed to label and organize otherwise fragmented diaspora political giving. The 80% figure is self-reported by the PAC.

52、FEC records show that this is an operating political organization rather than merely an advocacy website.

For the period January 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026, the FEC reports $69,500.99 in receipts and $43,018.84 in disbursements for the PAC, including $38,550 in contributions to other committees/candidate-related recipients. Because the PAC says some contributions are routed directly through Democracy Engine, the FEC summary does not necessarily represent all activity the organization attributes to its network; it does independently establish participation in the U.S. federal campaign-finance system.

53、Sunden’s capital relationships are therefore very different today from those of the 2000s.

Then, his network involved Dragon Capital, Western portfolio investors, advertisers, and buyers of media assets. Today it centers on diaspora donors, political candidates, members of Congress, policy organizations, and advocacy networks. He has moved from being a media entrepreneur managing a corporate balance sheet to a civic entrepreneur organizing political and social capital.

54、Sunden has not completely left the Kyiv Post’s content ecosystem, but he participates as founder and commentator rather than owner.

On September 30, 2026, shortly before the date of this research, the Kyiv Post published an opinion article under Sunden’s byline concerning U.S.-Ukraine politics. This shows a continuing public relationship with the publication he founded. Current ownership, publisher, and management records, however, provide no indication that he has regained control.

55、The Kyiv Post itself is increasingly positioning itself not merely as “Ukraine’s English-language newspaper” but as “Ukraine’s Global Voice” for Western audiences.

The site says that slogan was adopted in 2018. The Kivan/Chénier management team has self-reported that roughly 97% of readership is outside Ukraine or in Western markets and has discussed strengthening international nodes such as Washington and London. The strategy both resembles and reverses the logic of 1995: originally the newspaper primarily served foreigners living in Ukraine; today it increasingly serves people abroad who need to understand Ukraine.

56、That is the most important transformation in the Kyiv Post’s three-decade commercial logic.

In 1995 it solved the problem that foreigners in Kyiv could not easily understand local information. In the wartime 2020s it helps international policy, business, and public audiences understand Ukraine directly. English, once a niche that constrained scale, has become an international-distribution advantage as Ukraine has moved to the center of global security politics. The company says its global audience peaked at more than 65 million pageviews in 2014; current enterprise value should not be inferred from self-reported audience figures without independent financial data.

57、In reputational terms, the Kyiv Post’s most consequential external asset remains journalistic credibility rather than raw traffic.

Columbia Journalism Review in 2014 treated it as an unusually independent voice in Ukrainian media; the Missouri School of Journalism awarded its staff the Honor Medal that same year. From 2023 onward, the publication has also emphasized its high NewsGuard trust rating. Relative to traffic statistics, this credibility is closer to the core “influence asset” Sunden originally created: an English-language Ukrainian news brand that international readers turn to during major events.

58、Sunden’s most consequential decisions can be compressed into a clear timeline.

Studying Soviet/East European history from 1988 to 1992 led him into a region undergoing historic change. Staying in Ukraine after arriving in 1993 gave him local informational advantages. In 1995 he risked a few thousand dollars on an English-language media gap. Around 2000 he reinvested news profits in the internet. In 2002 Korrespondent brought him into mass local-language news. In 2006 he used bonds and equity markets to accelerate scale. From 2009 to 2011 he sold core assets during and after the advertising collapse. Around 2014 his home base shifted back to New York. From 2024 onward he increasingly converted his Ukraine network into congressional advocacy capacity in the United States.

59、His most significant achievement is not simply how large he made the Kyiv Post but the institutional influence created beyond its commercial scale.

A startup launched with a few thousand dollars, a handful of computers, and a small team became one of Ukraine’s best-known English-language news brands. Its profits financed assets such as Bigmir.net and Korrespondent. Its newsroom became a training ground for Ukrainian journalists. Its editorial-independence culture continued within the Kyiv Post and, after the 2021 rupture, indirectly through journalists who built other institutions. Sunden ultimately created four categories of asset: brand, talent, journalistic norms, and international networks, not merely a company.

60、His strongest commercial skill has been identifying structural gaps and turning one-off opportunities into institutions or platforms.

English-language news was one gap; a business directory was another; local Russian-language news another; internet portals another. Today, in Washington, he argues that although support for Ukraine is widespread, it lacks sufficiently permanent and professional institutional organization, leading him to build a Committee/PAC structure. Whatever one thinks of his political positions, the pattern is highly consistent: identify an existing but poorly organized constituency, then build an intermediary that concentrates information, trust, money, and relationships.

61、The most accurate description of Jed Sunden today is therefore neither simply “journalist” nor merely “media owner.”

He is better understood as an institution-building, cross-border entrepreneur whose first and most successful organizational vehicle happened to be journalism. He did not begin with elite reporting credentials; he built through market-gap identification, capital allocation, talent organization, international networks, and strong values. His historical commercial assets have been sold, but founder reputation, Ukrainian relationships, media connections, Jewish and educational civic ties, diaspora networks, and congressional relationships continue to constitute his real-world influence.

62、And the most accurate assessment of www.kyivpost.com today is that it is no longer Jed Sunden’s company, but it continues to operate on institutional foundations he helped establish.

Ownership now belongs to the Kivan family structure; the operating entity, management, revenue model, and international strategy have changed, and the publication experienced a severe governance rupture in 2021. Yet three foundational ideas have persisted from 1995 into 2026: explain Ukraine to the world in English; make independent reporting itself a source of commercial trust; and connect international audiences directly to Ukraine. Sunden’s relationship to the Kyiv Post has shifted from equity owner to historical founder and occasional contributor, while his principal center of present-day influence has moved from Kyiv-based media assets to a U.S.-based pro-Ukraine advocacy network.
