The first point to clarify is that The Jerusalem Post was not founded under its current name.

The direct predecessor of The Jerusalem Post was The Palestine Post, launched in Jerusalem under the British Mandate on December 1, 1932. Its principal founder and first editor was Gershon Agron, then still known as Gershon Agronsky. Ted Lurie was an essential collaborator in the founding process and became one of the paper’s most important early editors. In 1950, after the establishment of Israel, The Palestine Post was renamed The Jerusalem Post. The paper’s official history continues to identify Agron as its founder.

An important historical distinction is necessary: The Palestine Post was not a Palestinian Arab newspaper in the contemporary sense. It was founded by Zionist Jews and served as an English-language platform aimed at British Mandate officials, English-speaking readers, overseas Jewish communities and international opinion. In practice, its early role combined journalism, political communication and representation of the Jewish Yishuv to the outside world. Academic literature describes it as a major English-language voice of the Yishuv, while Agron himself worked throughout his career within the press and information structures of the Zionist Commission, World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency.

Agron is therefore better understood not simply as a newspaper proprietor but as a journalist, media entrepreneur, public-relations strategist, Zionist political communicator, network-builder and later public official. The strategic value of the newspaper was not merely the sale of printed copies. It created an English-language communications infrastructure through which the Yishuv could address British officials, diplomats and international media directly.

Agron was born into an Eastern European Jewish family, although sources differ slightly on his year of birth.

Detailed biographical accounts and retrospective articles by The Jerusalem Post give his birth date as December 27, 1893, in Mena in the Chernigov region of the Russian Empire, now in Ukraine. The National Library of Israel and some other institutional sources give his year of birth as 1894. The most accurate formulation is therefore: December 27, 1893 / 1894 — sources differ. His birth name was Gershon Harry Agronsky.

His father was Yehuda Agronsky and his mother Sheindl Mirenberg. His maternal grandfather was a rabbi, and his parents hoped that Gershon would also pursue a rabbinical path. He received a traditional Jewish education during childhood.

The family immigrated to the United States in 1906. Agron largely grew up in Philadelphia, attending Mishkan Israel Talmudic School and Brown Preparatory School. The family also lived in New York, where the young Agron at one point worked pushing a handcart in the Garment District. Public evidence is insufficient to classify the family precisely as poor, middle-class or affluent during his childhood; public information is limited / cannot be confirmed. What can be said is that he did not emerge from an established American media, financial or political dynasty.

Zionism became the organizing principle of his life unusually early.

At approximately fourteen, Agron and his friend Israel Goldstein, who later became an important American rabbi and Jewish communal leader, organized a Zionist boys’ club in Philadelphia. Zionism was therefore not a political identity Agron adopted opportunistically as an adult; it was already central to him during adolescence.

Among the Zionist thinkers who influenced him was Shmaryahu Levin. Around 1914, Agron wrote directly to Arthur Ruppin, then an important World Zionist Organization official in Jaffa, asking whether studying agriculture or engineering would make him more useful if he moved to Palestine. His career planning was therefore already being framed around the perceived needs of the Zionist project.

Agron received broad higher education, although there is no reliable evidence of a clearly completed university degree.

Biographical sources record attendance at Temple University, Gratz College, Dropsie College and the University of Pennsylvania. Gratz and Dropsie were important centers of Jewish higher learning in the United States, placing Agron intellectually at the intersection of traditional Jewish learning, modern American education and Zionist political culture.

Whether he formally completed a degree is less clear. Authoritative biographies generally list institutions attended rather than a specific degree. Public information is limited / cannot be confirmed.

His career ultimately moved away from agriculture, engineering and rabbinical training toward journalism and political communication. By 1915 he was working for Jewish newspapers in English and Yiddish. He initially wrote obituaries for The Jewish World, later moved into editorial writing, and in 1917 became an editor of the Zionist publication Das Jüdische Volk.

World War I transformed Agron from an ideological Zionist into an activist Zionist.

In April 1918 he joined the Jewish Legion, serving in the 40th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He trained in Windsor, Canada, and Plymouth, England, and rose to noncommissioned rank before serving in the Palestine theater.

He was not merely a soldier. Alongside figures such as Dov Yosef and Louis Fischer, Agron was involved in recruiting for the Legion, including contact with David Ben-Gurion. Zionist Organization of America officials recognized early that he could serve as an effective spokesman for American Jewish volunteers.

The experience established the professional pattern that characterized the rest of his life: he did not view journalism, political organization, public relations and activism as entirely separate activities. Communication itself was a form of political action.

After the war, Agron quickly entered the international Zionist press apparatus.

Between 1920 and 1921 he worked for the Zionist Commission Press Office and soon headed its press operation. In 1921 he traveled to the United States with a delegation led by Chaim Weizmann, which included Albert Einstein and Menachem Ussishkin and was closely associated with the establishment and fundraising work of Keren Hayesod.

Agron later returned to the United States and helped develop the Jewish Correspondence Bureau / Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA), becoming a news editor. JTA would become one of the most important global Jewish news agencies. The most important asset Agron gained during this period was not equity but a transatlantic network linking reporters, editors, Zionist officials, Jewish communal leaders and international newspapers.

Around 1924 he settled permanently in Palestine and occupied senior press roles within the Zionist Executive and Jewish Agency while corresponding for international news organizations. Academic research shows that by the 1940s he was a regular adviser to the Jewish Agency’s political and information departments, not simply a conventional reporter.

The original motive for founding The Palestine Post was political communication first and conventional newspaper economics second.

Agron identified a structural gap. Palestine had Hebrew- and Arabic-language newspapers, but lacked a strong professional English-language daily capable of explaining the Jewish Yishuv’s position to British officials, English-speaking residents and international audiences. The disturbances of 1929 strengthened his conviction that the Zionist movement required its own English-language narrative channel.

Before founding the paper, Agron had been closely involved with The Palestine Bulletin, which was linked to the Palestine Telegraphic Agency/JTA network. He took over its editorship in 1931, but disagreements over editorial autonomy helped push him toward establishing a new paper. The Bulletin ceased publication in 1932 and its operation was incorporated into the new Palestine Post.

Ted Lurie was indispensable to the founding story.

Agron recruited the young American immigrant Ted R. Lurie to help build the paper. Lurie became a central figure and eventually replaced Agron as editor when Agron became mayor of Jerusalem in 1955. JTA records show that Lurie graduated from Cornell University in 1930, settled in Palestine that year and joined the new Palestine Post in 1932.

Before launch, Agron and Lurie traveled to London to raise capital. The newspaper’s historical account says Agron asked the English Zionist Federation to purchase approximately £1,000 worth of shares in the proposed newspaper. Lurie also borrowed money from his father to support their fundraising trip. The startup financing was therefore not venture capital in the modern sense. It came from a combination of founder resources, Zionist institutional networks and Anglo-American Jewish capital.

Agron’s real capital advantage was consequently his ability to mobilize overlapping networks in London Zionist circles, American Jewish organizations, the Jewish Agency, JTA and international journalism.

The Palestine Post launched on December 1, 1932, with an initial print run of only 1,200 copies, but grew rapidly.

The first issue consisted of eight pages and 1,200 copies. Within a few months circulation had risen to roughly 4,000 copies a day. Its readership included members of the Jewish Yishuv, British soldiers and officials, and later substantial numbers of European Jewish immigrants.

Agron understood that even a paper with a strong political mission had to function as an attractive newspaper. The Palestine Post therefore carried not only Zionist politics but sports, culture, international news and practical information. To appeal to British readers, it even carried cricket results and cartoons. The underlying strategy was sophisticated: political communication becomes sustainable only when embedded in ordinary information consumption.

During the Arab Revolt of 1936–1939, the influx of British troops increased the potential English-language readership, and circulation reportedly reached around 20,000. The presence of Allied personnel in the Middle East during World War II further strengthened the paper.

Agron did not believe that political commitment and journalism had to be completely separated.

From its creation, The Palestine Post openly supported the Jewish Yishuv and the Zionist project. Academic sources describe it as an English-language mouthpiece of the Yishuv, and one of its explicit functions was to explain Zionist positions to Britain and the wider world.

This duality is central to any assessment of Agron. By contemporary American standards of newsroom independence, his closeness to a political movement was considerable. But from within the Zionist state-building project of the 1930s and 1940s, that was precisely the point. His objective was not simply to build a politically neutral commercial newspaper; it was to give a stateless political community an international communications infrastructure.

The paper’s relationship with British rule was nevertheless complicated. It was censored on occasions, particularly over reporting of violence and strong opposition to the 1939 White Paper. Some editions appeared with large blank areas where material had been removed by censors.

Agron’s second major role was that of international correspondent and quasi-diplomatic communicator before Israel existed.

During World War II he worked as a war correspondent in North Africa and elsewhere. By the 1940s he also filed material for international British press and news agencies. He served as a representative of the World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency at international gatherings, including the Jewish Agency delegation in San Francisco in 1945 at the time of the founding conference of the United Nations.

For Agron, The Palestine Post was therefore not an isolated enterprise. It was the central node in a broader media-diplomatic network: the newspaper supplied the platform, JTA and foreign newspapers supplied international distribution, Zionist institutions supplied political access, and English fluency supplied entry into British and American public opinion.

The bombing of The Palestine Post headquarters on February 1, 1948 became one of the defining events in the institution’s mythology.

A vehicle carrying a large quantity of explosives devastated the newspaper’s Jerusalem offices. Agron happened to be in Tel Aviv that evening. Despite severe damage, the staff managed to continue publishing, and the event became part of the institutional legend later cultivated by The Jerusalem Post: the newspaper had to appear even after its offices had been bombed.

The long-term symbolic value of the attack arguably exceeded its physical cost. It permanently linked the newspaper to the drama of Israel’s founding period, giving the brand historical capital beyond ordinary newspaper identity.

After 1948, Agron temporarily moved directly into the new state’s information apparatus.

In 1949 he took a senior role in the newly established Israeli government information system and around the same period Hebraized his surname from Agronsky to Agron. He temporarily stepped back from day-to-day editorial leadership of the newspaper.

Government service exposed a recurring problem: information work was constrained by overlapping interests from the prime minister’s office, foreign-policy institutions and other agencies, while lacking sufficient independence and budget. Agron left the government information position around 1951 and returned more fully to the newspaper.

His movement between these spheres reveals his true structural position: he was one of the figures capable of operating across journalism, public diplomacy and government information during Israel’s formative years.

The 1950 renaming of The Palestine Post as The Jerusalem Post marked the transition from pre-state Zionist advocacy to an English-language window on the State of Israel.

The paper formally adopted the name The Jerusalem Post in 1950. It became particularly important to diplomats, foreign correspondents, overseas Jewish communities and residents of Israel who did not read Hebrew.

That became the newspaper’s deepest competitive advantage. It did not need to defeat every Hebrew-language newspaper in mass circulation. Its special position was to explain Israel in English.

In 1955 Agron made the final major career transition of his life: from editor to mayor of Jerusalem.

He was elected mayor of West Jerusalem in 1955, while Ted Lurie assumed editorial leadership of the newspaper. As mayor, Agron focused on roads, utilities, employment and urban development while attempting to strengthen municipal finances through improved tax collection and incentives for businesses.

The transition was less abrupt than it might appear. After decades of relationships with political leaders, diaspora donors, international media and Zionist institutions, Agron was moving from “explaining Jerusalem” to “governing Jerusalem.”

Some municipal policies provoked opposition from religious conservatives, particularly the opening of public swimming facilities available to men and women. Ultra-Orthodox opponents reportedly conducted a religious curse ritual against him. Later folklore connected the curse to his death, but there is no evidence of causation; the episode is best understood as evidence of intense secular-religious conflict in Jerusalem.

Agron died in office on November 1, 1959.

He had undergone liver-related surgery and subsequently developed complications including pneumonia. Contemporary JTA reporting described schools closing in Jerusalem and large numbers of citizens, along with the president, prime minister and other national leaders, participating in the mourning. The Jewish Agency memorialized him simultaneously as a Jewish Legion veteran, founder-editor of The Jerusalem Post and mayor of Jerusalem.

His public memory remains visible in Agron Street and Beit Agron / Agron House in Jerusalem, while the National Library of Israel maintains archival material connected with him.

After Agron’s death, The Jerusalem Post did not become a hereditary founder-family media empire.

His son Dani Agron was later involved in business management at the newspaper, but ownership did not develop into a multigenerational family-control structure comparable with the Graham family at The Washington Post or the Blethen family at The Seattle Times. Agron’s principal legacy was institutional and reputational rather than dynastic ownership.

Under Ted Lurie and later editors, the newspaper remained broadly associated with Israel’s Labor establishment and center-left tradition for decades. By the late 1980s it was widely regarded as a Labor-oriented English-language paper.

The 1989 acquisition by Conrad Black’s Hollinger was the greatest ownership turning point since the newspaper’s founding.

Canadian media baron Conrad Black, through Hollinger, acquired The Jerusalem Post. Later reporting said Hollinger spent approximately $21.5 million acquiring the newspaper in stages.

The acquisition produced a substantial shift in editorial positioning, away from the paper’s historical Labor/center-left orientation and toward the political right. Cost-cutting and editorial conflict followed. The Guardian later reported that approximately 29 experienced journalists walked out within months, protesting editorial interference.

Some departing journalists later helped establish The Jerusalem Report, an English-language news magazine that was eventually acquired into the Jerusalem Post ecosystem — an ironic reversal in which a publication partly created by dissident Post journalists ultimately became a Post Group asset.

The Hollinger acquisition marked the transition from a newspaper rooted in Israel’s founding establishment to an asset governed by international media capital.

The launch of JPost.com in 1996 was another decisive turning point.

According to the company’s official history, JPost.com launched in 1996. This was relatively early in the development of digital newspapers and allowed the brand to reach readers directly in the United States, Europe, Australia and Jewish communities worldwide.

Digital distribution was especially well suited to the Jerusalem Post model. Its natural audience had always been transnational. The internet therefore magnified the original strategic insight of Agron: the core market was not simply local mass readership, but the global demand for English-language information about Israel and the Middle East.

In 2004 Hollinger sold The Jerusalem Post to Eli Azur’s Mirkaei Tikshoret, creating the ownership structure that continues today.

The transaction was reported at approximately $13.2 million, below the roughly $21.5 million Hollinger had spent to acquire the property. Canada’s CanWest Global Communications initially expected to acquire a 50% interest, but the arrangement broke down and CanWest ultimately failed to secure the stake after legal proceedings.

As of August 2026, the newspaper’s own About Us page states that Eli Azur acquired The Jerusalem Post in 2004 and continues to own it. Inbar Ashkenazi is listed as CEO of the Jerusalem Post Group and Zvika Klein as editor-in-chief.

The Jerusalem Post is now a multimedia brand rather than simply a daily newspaper.

Officially listed products include the Sunday-to-Friday print broadsheet, Jerusalem Post Magazine, In Jerusalem, the International Edition and The Jerusalem Report, in addition to JPost.com, podcasts and social media. The group also markets brands or content products such as Jerusalem Post Lite, Real Estate Listings, Travel and the “50 Most Influential Jews.”

A distinction should be made between legal or operating assets and influence assets. The newspaper, website, subscription operations, The Jerusalem Report and other publications are relatively clear media assets. Events, rankings such as the 50 Most Influential Jews, summits and editorial franchises are better understood as commercializable brand and influence assets rather than necessarily separate corporate entities.

Eli Azur’s wider resource network is substantially larger than The Jerusalem Post itself.

Public reporting has identified Azur’s media holdings as including the Hebrew newspaper Maariv, the news portal Walla!, radio stations 103FM and Eco99, the Charlton sports television channels and outdoor advertising interests. He acquired Maariv through a court-approved transaction in 2014 and Walla in 2020.

The Jerusalem Post therefore operates within a private Israeli media network spanning English news, Hebrew news, online media, radio, sports broadcasting and advertising.

Such ownership creates economic opportunities for content reuse, advertising packages, conference promotion and cross-platform distribution. At the same time, former employees have criticized management pressure to use more material from sister properties such as Maariv and Walla.

The Jerusalem Post’s business model can be divided into four major eras.

The first, from 1932 to 1948, was a print newspaper plus political mission model. Revenue came from newspaper sales, subscriptions and advertising, while initial capital and strategic value were heavily supported by Zionist institutional networks. Commercial economics and political communication existed simultaneously.

The second, from 1948 to 1989, was an English-language window on Israel model. Its scarcity value came from the fact that diplomats, foreign journalists, visitors, immigrants and diaspora Jews had relatively few alternative sources of Israeli news in English. Influence itself functioned as a competitive moat.

The third, from 1989 to 2004, was an international media-group asset model under Hollinger, characterized by ideological repositioning, cost control and shareholder return considerations.

The fourth, from 2004 to the present, is a digital traffic + advertising + subscriptions + sponsored content + events model. Today the Jerusalem Post offers premium digital subscriptions, online advertising, sponsored material, print and international editions, licensing and related commercial products.

Conferences have become a particularly important commercial and influence product.

The company’s conference calendar shows events extending well beyond Jerusalem and New York to cities such as Miami, Washington, London, Dubai and Marrakech. Themes include diplomacy, U.S.–Israel relations, technology, business, women’s leadership, aliyah and diaspora relations. Speakers frequently include ministers, diplomats, investors, executives and international political figures.

The economics are attractive. The Post can convert brand recognition, political access and readership into sponsorship revenue, ticketing, commercial partnerships, exposure and subsequent digital content.

The group even advertises conference production services, promising exposure across outlets including The Jerusalem Post and Maariv. Conferences are therefore not merely editorial forums; they are a defined commercial capability.

The deeper product has always been access rather than newsprint itself.

In the 1930s, Agron created access to British officials, foreign journalists and Anglo-American public opinion. Today the same institutional logic is monetized through digital audiences, advertising inventory, premium subscriptions, global summits, sponsored content, rankings and cross-media partnerships.

The Jerusalem Post therefore differs from an ordinary local newspaper. It effectively sells participation in — or access to — the conversation linking Israel, the Jewish diaspora, diplomacy, policy and international business.

Agron’s most important achievement was the creation of a media model that became part of Israel’s public-diplomacy infrastructure.

Before Israel existed, he recognized the strategic importance of English-language journalism. Rather than compete directly for the largest Hebrew mass audience, he chose a smaller but more strategically valuable English-speaking audience.

That decision made The Palestine Post and later The Jerusalem Post an important international window into the Yishuv and Israel. Agron can therefore reasonably be regarded as an early practitioner of Israeli hasbara/public diplomacy, not simply a newspaper editor.

His second major achievement was institutionalization. More than six decades after his death, the newspaper still exists. His most durable accomplishment was therefore not a personal column or temporary political reputation, but an institution capable of surviving its founder.

The paper’s greatest brand asset is historical continuity.

It has reported through the British Mandate, the Arab Revolt of 1936–1939, World War II, the 1948 war, Israel’s founding, subsequent Middle Eastern wars, peace processes, the internet revolution and the post-2023 conflict environment. Its brand can therefore draw not merely on current journalism but on the institutional memory of covering Israeli history continuously since 1932.

That is why the Jerusalem Post continues to possess international name recognition disproportionate to its domestic print scale, particularly among diplomats, overseas Jewish communities and English-speaking audiences.

The first fundamental controversy is whether Agron was a journalist or a political communicator. In reality, he was both.

He served Zionist institutions while working in journalism, and The Palestine Post openly advanced the political interests of the Jewish Yishuv. By contemporary standards emphasizing strict newsroom independence, that arrangement creates obvious conflicts of interest.

Yet it would be historically misleading simply to label this a failure of independent journalism. Agron was not attempting to build a modern American-style nonpartisan newspaper. His explicit objective was to use journalism to establish Zionist legitimacy. What changed later was that The Jerusalem Post became a commercial news organization operating under different expectations of editorial independence.

The second major controversy concerns editorial intervention and ideological change under Conrad Black.

Following the 1989 acquisition, the paper underwent a major staff exodus and a clear shift to the right. The Guardian connected the departure of 29 experienced journalists with protests over editorial interference.

From a commercial perspective, Black demonstrated that ownership could reposition the Jerusalem Post. From a reputational perspective, however, the intervention damaged the paper’s earlier image as a publication accommodating a wider range of political opinion. Much of the enduring perception of the Jerusalem Post as a right-leaning publication can be traced to this period.

The third controversy concerns the boundary between editorial and commercial operations under Eli Azur.

A 2023 investigation by The Forward, based on interviews with current and former employees, reported growing dependence on sponsored content and commercial conferences. Some employees argued that paid material was not always visually or linguistically separated clearly enough from ordinary journalism and that commercial pressure affected editorial decisions.

Former staff also described conflicts between editors and management over the labeling of sponsored material. These are allegations and professional assessments, not judicial findings.

The tension is structural: conferences and branded content allow a media company to monetize influence efficiently, but the more aggressively that model is pursued, the more difficult it becomes to preserve a clear line between journalism and client-funded content.

A fourth category of controversy involves misinformation and editorial verification failures.

In 2020, a Reuters investigation found that an apparent contributor named Oliver Taylor was likely a fabricated identity using an AI/deepfake-generated image. Opinion material under the fictitious identity had been published by several outlets, including The Jerusalem Post. The episode exposed weaknesses in contributor verification.

In December 2023, during the Israel-Gaza war, The Jerusalem Post published a report incorrectly claiming that footage of a dead Palestinian infant actually showed a “doll.” The newspaper later removed and retracted the report, citing faulty sourcing. The incident became a prominent example of misinformation risk during wartime.

Leadership turmoil in 2023 highlighted broader governance problems.

Avi Mayer became editor-in-chief in 2023 but left before completing a year. The Forward reported internal disputes involving management quality, commercial pressure and editorial standards. In December 2023, experienced journalist Zvika Klein became editor-in-chief.

As of August 2026, the Jerusalem Post continues to list Klein as its editor-in-chief.

Klein himself became involved in Israel’s Qatargate investigation in 2025, but being questioned must not be confused with being convicted.

In April 2025 Israeli police questioned Klein under caution in connection with the broader Qatargate investigation concerning alleged relationships between aides to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatari-linked interests. Klein said his contacts with Qatari officials were journalistic and noted that he had previously interviewed the Qatari prime minister.

The available public record does not justify concluding that Klein committed a crime. The episode is better understood as another demonstration of the Jerusalem Post’s position at the intersection of journalism, diplomacy and Israeli political power.

As of 2026, the Jerusalem Post occupies a distinctive dual position.

On one hand, it remains one of Israel’s best-known and longest-established English-language news organizations, operating international editions, a global website, podcasts and high-profile conferences. The newspaper has described its digital audience as reaching millions globally, and during the post-October 7 surge its editors said tens of millions of readers were visiting the site monthly.

On the other hand, within Israel’s Hebrew-language mass-media ecosystem, its agenda-setting power is no longer comparable with the country’s dominant Hebrew newspapers and broadcasters. Media observers quoted by The Forward argued that the Post’s importance in domestic Israeli media has declined from its historical peak.

Its most accurate current positioning is therefore not “Israel’s most powerful media organization,” but rather one of Israel’s most internationally recognizable English-language news brands, particularly influential among diaspora Jewish audiences, pro-Israel readers, diplomatic and foreign-policy circles, and international conference networks.

Agron’s deepest legacy is not a formal ideological school but a media strategy.

First, build an external narrative channel in a globally powerful language.

Second, measure media influence not only by mass circulation but by access to high-value audiences such as diplomats, journalists, political leaders and diaspora communities.

Third, embed the news institution within a broader organizational network so that it functions simultaneously as an information platform, relationship network and political-influence infrastructure.

Fourth, accept that such a model generates a permanent ethical problem: when one institution simultaneously performs journalism, national narrative-building and commercial monetization, where does journalism end and propaganda or commercial partnership begin?

For more than nine decades, the history of The Jerusalem Post has revolved around that tension. Agron’s achievement was recognizing unusually early that English-language media could generate political power. The Jerusalem Post’s central challenge today is to commercialize that accumulated influence without consuming the journalistic credibility on which the influence ultimately depends.
