Although Lee is conventionally identified as Dispatch's founder, contemporary testimony shows that this was not a solo venture. Founding member Seo Bo-hyun told Pressian that nine former colleagues from the same Sportsseoul.com department—including Lee and Lim Geun-ho—founded Dispatch together in 2011. Lee is therefore best understood as its central founding leader, newsroom-system designer, and later long-serving CEO/publisher.

2. Lee's real role today goes well beyond being the “owner of a gossip outlet.” He has been a founder-operator, publisher, editorial-system architect, and a key figure in the commercialization of Dispatch's K-pop content IP.

His early competitive advantage came from field reporting, source verification, surveillance-style evidence gathering, and photography. After Dispatch launched, he initially ran its news operation and became CEO in 2013. In the company's announcement of his appointment, Lee said Dispatch needed both more diverse content and greater economic self-sufficiency, and that it intended to pursue challenges beyond the traditional entertainment-news domain. D'ICON, D'FESTA, and later overseas K-pop retail initiatives can be understood as extensions of that strategic direction.

3. Reliable public information about Lee's family background is extremely limited.

A January 2026 obituary published by the Journalists Association of Korea identifies his mother as Shin Young-ja, who died at age 85, and lists siblings Lee Jin-gu, Lee Myeong-gu, and Lee Mi-hyun. A separate April 2026 family obituary confirms that Lee is married, but does not provide enough information to identify his spouse with certainty.

His date and place of birth, father's occupation, childhood socioeconomic environment, and the specific resources available to him while growing up are publicly limited / cannot currently be confirmed. They should therefore not be reverse-engineered from the schools he attended or his later career.

4. His verifiable educational record begins with Daeil Foreign Language High School, where he graduated from the Japanese-language department, followed by attendance at Dankook University.

The wording matters: Dispatch's own biography says that Lee “attended” Dankook University, not that he graduated. There is therefore no sound basis for claiming that he completed a degree there.

His university major is not clearly documented in the reliable sources reviewed. Another revealing early fact is that in 1995, he was selected in the short-story category of Chungcheong Ilbo's annual literary competition. That demonstrates an early background in writing and narrative craft, although it would be speculative to claim a direct causal link between this literary experience and Dispatch's later editorial style.

5. Lee entered journalism in 1994, which places his entire professional development across a major transformation in Korean media.

His career spans the shift from print-centered media through internet portals and eventually into mobile and social platforms. Dispatch's official 2013 biography confirms that he entered journalism in 1994 and later became head of the news department at Sportsseoul.com.

He was therefore not a technology entrepreneur who later entered journalism. The sequence was the reverse: he was a career journalist and editor who eventually turned a newsroom methodology into an independent company.

6. Much of what later became the “Dispatch method” had already developed during Lee's Sportsseoul.com years.

Lee worked on field-driven entertainment reporting with colleagues who later became central Dispatch figures, including Lim Geun-ho. Dispatch's own profile later portrayed Lee as someone who had introduced an investigative-reporting approach into Korean entertainment journalism while at Sportsseoul.com; because this is the company's own description, it should be treated as Dispatch's institutional claim rather than an uncontested historical fact.

More importantly, the 2015 Pressian interviews show that Dispatch's later practices—multiple reporters collaborating on one case, physically checking events rather than simply rewriting agency statements, and spending substantial time developing a single story—had roots in the same team's Sportsseoul.com experience. The company did not invent an entirely new method in 2011; it extracted an existing team and method from a larger organization and made them independent.

Career, Founding and Editorial System

7. The decisive entrepreneurial move in 2011 was the collective departure of nine colleagues from Sportsseoul.com.

A founding member later said that preparation took only two to three months. The nine had largely been professional journalists rather than entrepreneurs and had little experience creating and managing a company. In Dispatch's early days, even entertainment agencies sometimes failed to recognize the new publication's name.

Dispatch therefore did not begin as the incubated subsidiary of a large media group or as a venture-funded startup that later hired journalists. It resembled a classic professional-team spinout: the reporting team, know-how, and source network existed first; the company came second.

8. Their motivation was not simply to create a more aggressive celebrity-gossip site. They were dissatisfied with the production system of existing entertainment media.

Founding member Seo Bo-hyun said that reporters in their previous environment often felt disposable. Lee and other senior figures proposed building a company in which journalists themselves would be owners. Their definition of “press freedom” was particularly revealing: not merely freedom from editorial censorship, but freedom from being forced to produce advertorials, search-keyword articles, and other content reporters did not believe was worth writing.

Because the newsroom was small, Seo explained, it could not compete with portal-style entertainment sites on minute-by-minute speed or sheer article volume. 13. Dispatch also tried early on to establish distance from entertainment agencies.

Seo said in 2015 that reporters followed a principle of not accepting meals, drinks, or other hospitality from agencies and that Dispatch would try to pay when meeting industry sources. The stated rationale was straightforward: if a journalist repeatedly accepted hospitality from an agency, it could become much harder to publish an unfavorable investigation involving the same company or its artists.

That differentiated Dispatch from outlets that depended heavily on agency access, promotional exclusives, or advertising relationships.

Yet it also created a structural tension later in the company's evolution. The newsroom benefits from adversarial distance, while D'ICON and D'FESTA require official artist participation, commercial cooperation, production access, and rights arrangements. There is no public evidence establishing improper quid pro quo, but structurally the same entertainment companies can be both investigative subjects and commercial content partners. That is an inherent potential conflict the business must manage.

14. Dispatch has in fact been unusually candid about what kind of media organization it considers itself to be.

In 2015, Lim Geun-ho described Dispatch as a mass-market entertainment publication and compared its category more closely to Britain's The Sun or America's People than to a newspaper such as Le Monde. He acknowledged the voyeuristic element of celebrity journalism while arguing that Dispatch distinguished itself from rumor-driven reporting by trying to establish factual evidence.

That is the central Dispatch paradox:

The subject can be gossip; the evidence is supposed to resemble investigative reporting.

The combination explains why fans can describe it as Korean paparazzi while parts of the professional journalism establishment have later recognized some of its investigative work.

15. Dispatch developed its own internal idea of privacy boundaries, but those boundaries have always been heavily disputed.

Its core corporate entity remains Dispatch News Group Co., Ltd. Registered activities include internet news services, magazine publishing, e-commerce, and content provision. Saramin, citing NICE and Korea's National Pension Service, lists approximately 25 employees, reinforcing the picture of a very small specialist media organization.

Its current website architecture also extends well beyond dating exclusives, with sections including EXCLUSIVE, FEATURE, NEWS, PHOTOS, VIDEOS, FASHION, and ARTIST.

A more accurate present-day description is therefore:

entertainment investigative outlet + visual-content producer + K-pop IP publisher + e-commerce/event operator.

18. D'ICON is the key asset in Dispatch's transition from “media influence” to “directly monetizable content.”

D'ICON is Dispatch's premium K-pop photobook/magazine series. In 2018, Yonhap reported that Sports Seoul signed an MOU covering publishing and wholesale distribution of D'ICON. Products at the time included editions involving BTS, NU'EST W, and SEVENTEEN, built around exclusive photographs and specially produced material.

This fundamentally changed the economics of Dispatch's visual capability.

In conventional news, celebrity photographs function mainly as:

Dispatch's most important “capital” therefore appears less financial than relational:

23. Economically, Dispatch is a company whose influence is highly disproportionate to its financial and organizational size.

Saramin/NICE currently lists Dispatch News Group's latest reported revenue at approximately KRW 4.539 billion, with about 25 employees.

As of the research date, its official Instagram account @koreadispatch has about 12 million followers, an extraordinarily large international reach for a company of roughly 25 employees.

Dispatch's corporate materials have also emphasized global social media and overseas K-pop audiences as strategic priorities, while its current site continues to produce airport photography, performance coverage, artist video, fashion, and other highly shareable visual material.

Instagram and other digital distribution channels are therefore best treated as influence assets: their precise balance-sheet value cannot be established from public information, but they are central to the company's practical competitive moat.

Turning Points, Results, Controversies and Current Position

27. When compressed into a timeline, Dispatch's development path becomes unusually clear.

1994: Lee Myeong-gu enters journalism.

1995: He is selected in the short-story category of Chungcheong Ilbo's literary competition.

Late 2000s: At Sportsseoul.com, the future Dispatch team develops field investigation, collaborative reporting, and photographic verification methods.

December 2010: Dispatch News Group is incorporated.

March 2011: Dispatch officially launches.

2013: Lee becomes CEO and explicitly calls for diversified content and economic self-sufficiency.

After creating Dispatch:

their source network became a resource of their own company;

their photographic archive became proprietary content;

a successful scoop built the Dispatch brand rather than a parent company's brand;

Dispatch did not invent public curiosity about celebrity relationships. What it changed was the evidentiary and visual standard of the entertainment scoop.

Instead of a single rumor, the product became a narrative package consisting of:

32. Its most serious and fundamental controversy, however, has always been privacy.

The most legally significant case involved Dispatch's photography and reporting on Shinsegae executive Chung Yong-jin and his partner during private meetings and dating activity. In 2013, the South Korean Supreme Court ultimately held that the coverage infringed privacy and upheld an order requiring removal of the material and total damages of KRW 15 million. 33. Public resentment eventually extended beyond fan criticism into a major petition seeking Dispatch's closure.

In 2018, a South Korean Blue House petition targeting Dispatch over celebrity and non-celebrity privacy issues surpassed 200,000 signatures, triggering an official government response. 37. As of 2026, Dispatch's practical influence has not disappeared despite the maturation of the K-pop industry and the decentralization brought by social media.

Its website continued publishing entertainment news, exclusives, investigative pieces, field photography, and video at high frequency through August and September 2026. Lee Myeong-gu remained CEO/publisher and Lim Geun-ho remained the named editor.

D'ICON continues to release products;

Tokyo's D'PARTMENT remains a Japanese retail node for D'ICON;

Instagram has approximately 12 million followers;
