Origins, Founder, Business Model, Capital Structure, Controversies, and Current Position

1. The most important clarification is that Grant Petty did not originally “found” DaVinci Resolve, although he is the person most responsible for transforming it into the product we know today.

DaVinci Resolve has two distinct historical lineages.

The first comes from the American company da Vinci Systems. At NAB 2004, da Vinci Systems was already demonstrating a software-based color-enhancement family called Resolve, including Resolve FX, Resolve DI, and Resolve RT, aimed respectively at visual effects, digital intermediate work, and real-time 2K processing. Resolve was still a classic high-end professional post-production system built around Linux, dedicated control surfaces, servers/rendering infrastructure, and expensive installations. Contemporary coverage quoted Resolve product manager David Catt explaining its architecture.

The second lineage is Blackmagic Design of Australia. In 2009 Blackmagic announced that it had acquired all assets of DaVinci Systems LLC. Grant Petty subsequently led Resolve through radical price reduction, Mac-based software distribution, a free edition, editing expansion, Fusion VFX integration, Fairlight audio integration, and eventually AI-driven workflows.

So, if the question is, “Who originally created Resolve?”, the answer should not be Grant Petty.

If the question is, “Who turned Resolve from an expensive professional color-grading system into the free/low-cost, cross-platform application integrating editing, grading, VFX, audio, collaboration, and AI?”, Grant Petty is the central figure.

Historical public records do not identify one universally accepted individual as the singular “founder of Resolve” in the modern startup sense. Public information is limited / accounts differ / cannot currently be confirmed.

2. Even the founding structure of Blackmagic Design is more complicated than the simplified story that Grant Petty founded it alone.

Grant Petty is unquestionably its central founder and longtime CEO. Forbes described Petty and software engineer Douglas “Doug” Clarke as cofounders of Blackmagic in 2001 and reported that Petty had met Clarke through an Apple computer user group in the 1990s.

However, ABC Australia, reporting in 2026 from an ongoing Federal Court shareholder dispute, described Peter Barber, Grant Petty, and Douglas Clarke as cofounders. Barber was an old school friend of Petty from Shepparton and later worked with him in Singapore. Earlier Australian financial reporting has alternatively characterized Barber as an early marketing executive and seed investor.

The safest interpretation is therefore that Petty is Blackmagic's core founder, CEO, and center of product philosophy and operating control; Clarke is the crucial technical cofounder; and Barber was a critical member of the earliest founding, capital, marketing, and international business structure, explicitly described as a cofounder in 2026 court-related reporting. Historical descriptions are not completely consistent.

This distinction matters because Petty should not be viewed merely as a software founder. He created a vertically integrated imaging-technology company spanning software, cameras, broadcast hardware, control surfaces, video interfaces, manufacturing, supply chains, and post-production workflows.

3. Petty's family background is one of the most important factors for understanding his business philosophy.

Forbes reported in 2022 that the then-53-year-old Petty had grown up poor in rural Australia. His father was an engineer; his mother was an artist and nurse. After his parents separated, his family moved into public housing.

He therefore did not emerge from an elite technology household or a family with established film-industry connections.

Petty has repeatedly described his entrepreneurial motivation as a reaction against class hierarchy. He experienced social stratification associated with housing and family background while growing up, and later believed he encountered the same hierarchy in television: people controlling expensive technology and capital had power, while creative people had relatively little.

Blackmagic's later habit of turning technologies costing hundreds of thousands of dollars into products costing thousands—or nothing—is therefore not merely a pricing tactic. Based on Petty's public comments over more than two decades, it is a direct extension of his worldview.

4. His birth year can only be estimated, and his place of upbringing should not be confused with a verified birthplace.

Forbes said Petty was 53 in April 2022, implying that he was born approximately in 1968 or 1969. Reliable public sources do not provide a consistently verified exact date of birth, so this remains an estimate.

What can be established more confidently is that he grew up in rural Victoria and has deep ties to Shepparton. ABC in 2026 described Petty and Peter Barber as school friends who grew up there.

His exact city of birth is not currently confirmable from sufficiently reliable public material.

5. His educational route was vocational and self-directed rather than elite-university based.

Petty taught himself programming on an Apple II while in middle school and developed an intense interest in electronics. Forbes reported that he earned a certificate in electronics from a technical college in 1991; Mediaweek has identified him as a former Shepparton TAFE student.

The formal qualification that can be reliably established is therefore vocational technical education rather than a university bachelor's or postgraduate degree. There is no sufficiently authoritative public evidence that he completed a conventional university degree.

This matters because his later management style places unusual emphasis on first-hand understanding of hardware, electronics, software, factories, and customer workflows. Even when Blackmagic had roughly 1,500 employees and hundreds of millions in revenue, Forbes reported that Petty was still personally writing internal SQL and operational software.

6. The professional experience that fundamentally redirected his life was working in television post-production in Singapore.

After his electronics training, Petty worked at a television post-production facility in Singapore maintaining expensive audiovisual equipment. Forbes reported that some equipment needed to be rented for roughly $1,000 per hour to justify its cost.

Petty saw a structural problem:

equipment was extremely expensive;

companies therefore needed loans or major capital commitments;

the people controlling the equipment and capital acquired decision-making power;

creative staff became dependent on those technical and financial gatekeepers.

His first instinct was therefore not “I want to make movies.”

It was closer to:

“Can professional video technology be moved from proprietary machines onto ordinary personal computers?”

That is why early Blackmagic was neither a camera company nor a DaVinci Resolve company. It entered the market through video capture cards and computer-based video workflows.

7. Doug Clarke's importance was that he helped convert Petty's product philosophy into functioning engineering products.

Forbes reported that Petty met Clarke through an Apple computer user group in the 1990s and originally hired him for a summer job. Clarke became a cofounder and long-term technical figure at Blackmagic.

One of Blackmagic's defining early products was DeckLink. Less than two years after the company was founded, it introduced a Mac-compatible uncompressed HD video card for approximately $995, while its nearest competitor was charging around $10,000.

This established what became the Blackmagic template:

identify high-end professional technology;

observe that incumbent prices are extremely high;

argue that much of the price reflects legacy industry structure rather than irreducible technical cost;

reimplement the capability using commodity computing, internal engineering, and scalable manufacturing;

then reduce the price by an order of magnitude.

Years later, this formula would be applied to Resolve, digital cinema cameras, live-production switchers, control surfaces, and other professional video products.

8. Peter Barber cannot be ignored when examining Blackmagic's early commercialization and capital structure.

Australian financial reporting has described Barber as an old school friend of Petty who later worked with him in Singapore and participated in Blackmagic's early marketing and financing. ABC's 2026 coverage described Barber, Petty, and Clarke as part of the founding group.

The early structure can therefore be understood approximately as follows:

Petty was the center of product philosophy, leadership, and ultimately control;

Clarke was a key technical implementation partner;

Barber was particularly important in the commercial, marketing, early-capital, and international-business dimension.

That relationship endured for years but ultimately deteriorated and resulted in the public shareholder litigation that emerged in 2026.

9. Resolve's true origin lies in professional digital color grading and the Digital Intermediate revolution, not in consumer video editing.

At NAB 2004, da Vinci Systems described Resolve as a programmable, software-based color-enhancement line. Resolve FX targeted visual effects, Resolve DI digital intermediate work, and Resolve RT real-time 2K. The system linked color decisions more directly with clips and edit order so that grading and conform/editing could be handled more flexibly.

For the period, this was sophisticated technology because cinema post-production remained heavily dependent on proprietary hardware, high-end storage, dedicated control surfaces, and large post facilities.

By 2007, Technicolor had purchased Resolve RT and a Resolve Conform Station for 4K DI work, demonstrating that Resolve had already penetrated world-class professional post-production before Blackmagic acquired it.

Blackmagic therefore did not acquire an obscure application in 2009.

It acquired a prestigious high-end cinema technology asset whose commercial structure still belonged to an older era of specialist professional equipment.

10. Blackmagic's 2009 acquisition of da Vinci Systems was one of the most important capital-allocation decisions of Petty's career.

Blackmagic officially announced that it had purchased all assets of DaVinci Systems LLC in 2009.

Forbes later reported that da Vinci systems had been selling for roughly $350,000 to $850,000. Petty believed the core technology could be turned into a more purely software product and brought to broadly available platforms such as the Mac.

The brilliance of the decision was not simply buying a famous brand.

Blackmagic obtained decades of color-science experience, engineering expertise, industry reputation, and access to professional users—and then deliberately attacked the acquired asset's original high-price business model.

Most acquirers try to preserve the margins of an expensive legacy product.

Petty did the opposite: he acquired a premium asset and then democratized it through extreme price compression.

11. The 2010–2011 price collapse and free edition constituted Resolve's first major revolution under Blackmagic.

Soon after taking control, Blackmagic moved Resolve away from systems costing hundreds of thousands of dollars toward software that could be bought independently.

Forbes reported that roughly a year after the acquisition, Blackmagic released a software-only version for about $995, followed about a year later by a free download.

Blackmagic's Resolve 7-era releases also documented the transition toward a more conventional software product on mainstream computer platforms.

This changed more than price.

It changed who was able to learn professional color grading.

Technology that previously lived primarily inside elite post houses, broadcasters, and film labs became accessible to students, independent filmmakers, small studios, and individual computer users.

That became Resolve's most powerful adoption flywheel: free users are not necessarily low-value users; they can become future professional users, camera customers, control-panel customers, Studio customers, and members of the professional talent pool.

That final interpretation is a business inference from Blackmagic's product and pricing structure; the company does not publish complete conversion statistics.

12. Blackmagic then chose not to remain a color-grading company; it began absorbing the entire post-production chain.

The progression is clear.

By the Resolve 11 era, editing and media-management capabilities had expanded enough for Resolve increasingly to function as an independent NLE rather than merely a grading application attached to another editor.

In 2014, Blackmagic acquired eyeon Software, bringing Fusion's visual-effects and compositing technology into the company. Blackmagic's historical news archive records the acquisition.

Fusion was then progressively incorporated into Resolve, becoming an integrated VFX and motion-graphics workspace with Resolve 15.

In 2016, Blackmagic announced the acquisition of Fairlight, after which Fairlight's professional audio editing, mixing, and post-production capabilities were integrated into Resolve.

The acquisition strategy can therefore be summarized as:

acquire mature specialist technologies with decades of professional development → remove the boundaries between standalone products → integrate them into Resolve → create a unified project workflow.

That is also one of the fundamental differences between Resolve and Adobe's historical model. Adobe commonly coordinates Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and other applications; Resolve increasingly places editing, VFX, grading, and audio inside one database and application through task-specific “Pages.”

13. Each major generation of Resolve corresponds to Blackmagic gradually redefining what a post-production application can contain.

Resolve 12 substantially matured editing.

Resolve 14 in 2017 pushed Fairlight integration and continued strengthening the free edition.

Resolve 15 in 2018 brought Fusion's node-based visual-effects environment directly into Resolve.

Resolve 16 in 2019 introduced the Cut Page for fast turnaround editing and further machine-learning capabilities through the Neural Engine. This showed that Blackmagic was no longer targeting only high-end colorists; it was directly targeting editors, YouTube creators, news workflows, and fast delivery.

Today, Media, Cut, Edit, Fusion, Color, Fairlight, and Deliver workspaces collectively cover media organization, editing, VFX, color grading, audio, and output inside the same environment.

14. In 2025–2026, the next strategic direction became clear: AI, still photography, and deeper automation.

Resolve 20 substantially expanded AI functionality in 2025, including tools addressing scripting, subtitles, multicamera workflows, and audio automation.

DaVinci Resolve 21, introduced in 2026, added a Photo Page, extending Resolve into still-photography workflows, along with AI IntelliSearch, focus/person-related tools, new Fusion graphics capabilities, Fairlight improvements, and immersive/VR workflows.

As of October 7, 2026, Blackmagic's own homepage is promoting DaVinci Resolve 21.1, with AI-assistant integration as a major new direction. Industry coverage reports that assistants such as Claude, Claude Code, and ChatGPT Codex can interact more directly with Resolve workflows for tasks including project analysis, media organization, settings changes, and batch operations.

Resolve has therefore evolved from:

a professional color corrector,

to an editing application,

to a complete film and television post-production suite,

and now toward a broader creative operating environment spanning video, sound, images, and AI automation.

The last formulation is an analytical description of the direction of the product, not Blackmagic's formal category label.

15. Petty's most important asset is not DaVinci Resolve in isolation; it is the entire privately held Blackmagic Design ecosystem.

Blackmagic currently sells professional cameras, DaVinci Resolve/Fusion software, ATEM production switchers, DeckLink capture and playback products, Ultimatte, Cintel scanning systems, converters, monitoring, routing, network storage, streaming, and encoding products.

Resolve functions as the software center of that network.

It shares color science, RAW formats, metadata, and post workflows with cameras;

works with specialized control panels;

connects to professional I/O and monitoring hardware;

uses Blackmagic Cloud for collaborative workflows;

and links acquisition, post-production, and delivery into one broader system.

That ecosystem is harder to reproduce than an application alone because a competitor would need to replicate not merely Resolve's software but hardware, manufacturing, control surfaces, color workflows, and a large installed skills base.

16. The most unusual aspect of Blackmagic's business model is that one of its most influential products is largely free.

As of 2026, DaVinci Resolve still has a highly capable free edition, while the official price of DaVinci Resolve Studio is approximately $295. Studio adds more Neural Engine functionality, Resolve FX, advanced noise reduction, 10-bit/high-frame-rate capabilities, multiple-GPU support, HDR and immersive workflows, and other professional functions.

At the same time, Blackmagic sells dedicated Resolve hardware ranging from relatively inexpensive editing devices to professional color panels costing many thousands of dollars.

The business can therefore be understood in three layers:

free software massively broadens the entry funnel;

Studio generates paid software-license revenue;

professional hardware, cameras, I/O devices, control surfaces, and the wider Blackmagic ecosystem provide additional monetization.

Because Blackmagic is privately held, it does not publish a detailed segment breakdown showing exactly how much profit comes from free-to-Studio conversion versus cameras or hardware. Public information is limited / cannot currently be confirmed.

17. Free Resolve is better understood as industrial distribution strategy than as charity.

Structurally, the free edition can do several things simultaneously:

allow students and new creators to learn the Blackmagic workflow without paying first;

allow independent filmmakers to introduce Resolve into real projects;

expand the pool of trained Resolve users available to professional companies;

increase the potential market for Blackmagic cameras, panels, keyboards, and Studio licenses;

and turn Resolve into a common language across the rest of the Blackmagic ecosystem.

This is a form of software-led hardware ecosystem, but unlike Apple, Blackmagic does not require users to purchase its hardware before accessing the core software.

Free distribution therefore reduces friction at the entrance to the ecosystem.

18. Another defining Petty principle is hostility toward subscription dependence and external capital control.

In Forbes's 2022 profile, Petty sharply criticized perpetual cloud-software rental models, arguing in essence that customers should not be penalized for remaining loyal through endless payments.

This creates a clear contrast with Adobe Creative Cloud:

Adobe's core commercial model is recurring subscription;

Resolve Studio has historically been sold at a comparatively low one-time purchase price while the free edition already performs substantial professional work.

One caution is necessary: users often describe the $295 Studio purchase as guaranteeing “free upgrades forever.” Blackmagic has historically provided many major upgrades at no additional cost, but it would be unsafe to treat all future major versions as contractually guaranteed to remain free forever.

19. Historically, Blackmagic's most distinctive capital feature has been its refusal to follow the conventional VC-funding-to-IPO path.

Petty has repeatedly emphasized self-funding and resistance to external financial control. In a 2017 interview he said Blackmagic had not relied on venture capital or borrowing and had turned down acquisition proposals. Forbes still described the company as debt-free in its 2021 financial discussion.

For the fiscal year ending in 2021, Forbes reported roughly $576 million in revenue and $113 million in profit and estimated that, under the unusually high technology valuations of the period, a public Blackmagic might have been worth around $3 billion. That was a Forbes valuation estimate, not a public-market transaction price.

The significance of avoiding outside capital is not only financial.

It has allowed Petty to make decisions that do not necessarily maximize near-term margin:

heavy R&D spending;

aggressive price reductions;

free Resolve distribution;

internal manufacturing;

large in-house engineering capabilities;

and proprietary operational and supply-chain systems.

20. Blackmagic's manufacturing system is an underestimated source of Petty's power and the company's competitive advantage.

Forbes reported that during the pandemic Blackmagic manufactured hundreds of its products itself and operated manufacturing capacity in Australia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Petty even rewrote internal workflow software connecting inventory databases to coordinate components between factories.

Forbes Australia has reported that Blackmagic initially manufactured its hardware in Australia, later expanded into Singapore to gain manufacturing-management capacity, and opened a facility in Batam, Indonesia, in 2016, close to Singapore. Some larger and engineering-intensive production remained in Australia.

This helps explain why Blackmagic can repeatedly offer hardware at prices competitors consider unusually low.

Its advantage is not merely willingness to cut prices. The company controls a large portion of:

engineering;

industrial design;

software;

supply chain;

production;

marketing;

distribution;

and the product-support ecosystem.

Petty was already emphasizing this combination of internal manufacturing, marketing, and distribution in 2017.

21. By 2026, Blackmagic's ownership structure had become the most immediate governance risk facing Petty.

In July 2026, ABC reported that shareholder and cofounder Peter Barber had sued Blackmagic, Grant Petty, and Douglas Clarke in Australia's Federal Court. Barber alleges that he has been denied dividends, company information, and the ability to sell his stake.

ABC reported that Petty and Clarke each owned approximately 35.8%, while Barber owned approximately 28%.

Court documents described by ABC also say venture-capital firm Five V Capital showed interest in investing in Blackmagic in 2023 at a valuation range of approximately $900 million to $1.5 billion, but withdrew after being told Petty would not entertain a transaction. It is crucial to distinguish allegation from fact: claims that Petty obstructed Barber's share sale or deliberately sabotaged an investment remain Barber's allegations, not final judicial findings.

Blackmagic and Petty have denied the allegations and said they will respond through the court process.

As of October 7, 2026, there is no public final judgment resolving the case. Whether any party violated legal duties, whether Barber must be bought out, or whether external investors will enter the company is therefore not currently confirmed.

The dispute goes directly to the center of Petty's philosophy:

do not let outside investors change the company.

Historically that independence has been one of Blackmagic's greatest strengths.

It has now also become central to a conflict over minority-shareholder liquidity and corporate governance.

22. Petty's most important decisions can all be understood as repeated applications of the same underlying logic.

First, he moved professional video capture from expensive proprietary hardware toward personal computers, with DeckLink bringing capabilities that had cost roughly an order of magnitude more down to around $995.

Second, he acquired da Vinci in 2009 and chose not to preserve the acquired company's $350,000–$850,000 pricing structure, instead taking Resolve toward a $995 software product and eventually free distribution.

Third, he pushed Resolve from grading into editing, forcing it eventually into direct competition with Avid, Final Cut Pro, and Premiere Pro. By 2016, industry training material was already discussing Resolve as an increasingly integrated editing-and-grading environment.

Fourth, he acquired Fusion and Fairlight and integrated VFX and professional audio directly into the application.

Fifth, Blackmagic entered cameras. Petty has explained that as more Resolve users worked with inexpensive cameras, poor input quality and limited dynamic range constrained what could be accomplished in grading, encouraging Blackmagic to build affordable high-dynamic-range cameras itself. The camera business was therefore not entirely separate from Resolve; it extended the workflow upstream toward image capture.

Sixth, he retained vertically integrated manufacturing and private control instead of building a conventionally outsourced, venture-backed public technology company.

All these decisions reflect one consistent strategy:

find expensive, closed, gatekept parts of the film-production chain, re-engineer them, and dramatically reduce the cost of entry.

23. Petty's greatest achievement is not merely that Resolve became a good video editor; it is that he changed expectations about what professional imaging technology should cost.

Before Blackmagic, high-end film grading was a classic capital-equipment business: large post houses purchased systems costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, trained specialist colorists, and billed clients for expensive suite time.

Blackmagic turned that model into:

a normal computer;

a free download;

a few-hundred-dollar Studio license;

and optional professional control surfaces when needed.

That structural change matters more than any individual software feature.

In 2022 Forbes still characterized Resolve as extremely strong in professional color correction while noting that, at that time, it remained behind Premiere Pro and Avid in the broader editing market.

Resolve therefore did not move upward from consumer editing into professional film.

Its trajectory was largely the reverse:

it descended from the top of the professional film-color industry into the mass creator market.

That gives the brand an unusual dual identity.

To ordinary creators, it is one of the most capable free professional creative applications available.

To the film industry, it still carries decades of DaVinci color-grading heritage.

24. Resolve's Hollywood presence is real, but claims that a precise percentage of all movies “use Blackmagic” should be treated cautiously.

Blackmagic publishes extensive film and television customer stories, and recent company case studies continue to document DaVinci Resolve use in major movies, streaming productions, and professional post facilities.

Technicolor was already using Resolve for 4K DI work in 2007, before Blackmagic's acquisition.

Professionals interviewed by Forbes in 2022 also described practical use of Blackmagic cameras and Resolve in high-end virtual-production and television workflows.

However, Petty and Blackmagic have at various times cited very high adoption percentages in marketing interviews. Those numbers are often company-generated, and “Blackmagic used on a production” could mean Resolve grading, a camera, I/O hardware, Fusion, or another component. It should not automatically be interpreted as meaning that the entire production was created solely inside Resolve.

The defensible conclusion is:

Resolve is one of the mainstream pieces of infrastructure in global professional post-production, not merely a low-cost application for YouTubers; however, there is no continuously updated, independent public database that can establish a precise worldwide market share.

25. One of Blackmagic's clearest execution failures was the 2012 shipping crisis surrounding its first Cinema Camera.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera generated enormous attention because it offered RAW-oriented digital-cinema capabilities at a price dramatically below traditional cinema cameras.

But shipments repeatedly slipped from their original summer schedule. Contemporary industry reporting eventually traced the problem to sensor-supplier quality-control issues, including contamination beneath bonded sensor glass, forcing Blackmagic engineers to intervene directly in the supply chain.

The episode exposed the other side of the Blackmagic model:

very aggressive pricing + rapid product development + complex hardware manufacturing can amplify supply-chain and quality-control risk.

The event did not destroy the company; Blackmagic subsequently built a substantial camera business. But it remains an important example of Petty's ambitious product promises colliding with manufacturing reality.

26. Another enduring controversy around Blackmagic is not scandal but disruptive pricing and its effect on industry economics.

From the user's perspective, turning a $350,000–$850,000 class of technology into a $995 product and then a free application is profound democratization.

From the perspective of incumbent hardware vendors and businesses whose economics depended on scarce high-end equipment, it destroys an old source of pricing power.

Petty's democratization therefore also represents a redistribution of market power:

formerly, owning the machine itself was a competitive advantage;

when the tools become cheap, competitive advantage shifts toward talent, taste, speed, client relationships, and workflow.

This is an industry-structure interpretation based on Blackmagic's documented pricing history, not an allegation of unlawful anticompetitive conduct. There is no reliable basis here for claiming that Resolve's free pricing has been found to constitute illegal monopolization.

27. Petty's most controversial personal characteristic is arguably his unusually strong desire for control and his deep distrust of conventional technology-company management models.

Forbes portrayed this vividly: despite Blackmagic's scale, Petty continued to write internal operational software himself and publicly criticized outsourcing, recurring software rental, venture-funding culture, and the standard “raise capital, go public, exit” technology-company playbook.

Operationally, that mentality has allowed Blackmagic to:

think long term;

ignore quarterly public-market pressure;

give away Resolve;

build its own factories;

and create products across hardware and software boundaries.

But from a corporate-governance perspective, the same philosophy can make shareholder liquidity, delegation, and eventual succession more difficult.

Peter Barber's 2026 litigation is the first major public confrontation exposing that tension at such intensity. Whether any legally improper conduct occurred remains for the courts to determine, but the conflict between founder control and another shareholder's ability to obtain liquidity is now undeniably public.

28. AI represents an interesting evolution in Petty's strategy.

Forbes Australia reported in 2023 that Petty was highly skeptical of the contemporary AI boom and regarded much of the excitement as overhyped.

Blackmagic nevertheless did not reject machine learning.

Resolve 16 already had Neural Engine capabilities; versions 19 and 20 dramatically expanded AI features; and Resolve 21.1 in 2026 moved further toward allowing outside AI assistants to interact with project workflows.

The most accurate interpretation is therefore not that Petty “opposed AI and reversed himself.”

He has historically been skeptical of AI as a capital-markets narrative.

At the same time, when AI can solve concrete workflow problems involving editing, search, subtitles, audio, person detection, or project automation, Blackmagic is willing to productize it rapidly.

That is consistent with his longer-term philosophy: technology itself is not the goal; lowering cost and friction for creators is.

29. As of October 2026, Petty's real-world position can be understood at three levels.

First, he remains Blackmagic Design's CEO and one of its two largest core shareholders; ABC reported his holding at approximately 35.8%. ABC also reported that the company generated more than “$550 million” in its latest financial year and operated roughly 10 offices worldwide. The cited ABC passage uses the “$” symbol without explicitly spelling out the currency in that section, so it would be inappropriate to invent a USD/AUD conversion.

Second, he is no longer simply the owner of a film-equipment business.

Blackmagic controls meaningful parts of image capture, live production, video I/O, post-production, color grading, VFX, audio, and delivery. DaVinci Resolve is the software center connecting much of that system.

Third, he is confronting one of the most important governance challenges in the company's twenty-five-year history: Peter Barber's shareholder litigation.

If Petty ultimately retains the existing level of control, Blackmagic is likely to remain an unusually founder-driven company with limited outside capital influence.

If the proceedings ultimately force a major share transaction, introduce new investors, or change governance, the dispute could become one of the most consequential capital-structure turning points in Blackmagic's history.

Those possible outcomes remain speculative and cannot currently be confirmed.

30. If Grant Petty's contribution has to be summarized in one sentence, he changed not merely a software product but the industry's assumption about how expensive professional film technology should be and who should be allowed to own it.

DaVinci Resolve is the clearest expression of that philosophy.

It began in the world of expensive high-end post-production systems.

Blackmagic acquired it.

Collapsed the price barrier.

Moved it onto ordinary computers.

Released a free edition.

Added full editing.

Absorbed Fusion.

Absorbed Fairlight.

Connected it with cameras and dedicated control hardware.

Added cloud collaboration.

Added extensive AI.

And in 2026 expanded into still photography.

Grant Petty should therefore not be described as the original founder of DaVinci Resolve.

A more accurate description is:

the core founder and longtime CEO of Blackmagic Design, a highly controlling product entrepreneur, and the principal architect of the transformation of DaVinci Resolve from an expensive professional color-grading asset into a global creative platform.

Resolve's deepest legacy may not ultimately be any specific software feature.

It demonstrated that a professional workflow once dependent on large companies, expensive machine rooms, and equipment costing hundreds of thousands of dollars could be re-engineered until it could run on the computer of an ordinary creator.
